St. Columba's Primary School
NEWSLETTER | TERM 4 | WEEK 4 | 3 NOVEMBER 2022

From the Principal
Dear Parents and Carers,
What a wonderful celebration of Grandparents day we had last Friday. There was standing room only in the church and our students were terrific in leading everyone with the Mass and Liturgy. Thank you to the staff involved in organising and preparing the students for the day. A huge thank you to the P&F Reps and the parents involved in organising the Grandparents morning tea. It was exceptionally well catered for and organised.
All Saints Day Mass
Well done to our students for leading our Mass this morning, celebrating All Saints Day. The
students were very reverent and spoke very well with the prayers and readings. Many thanks
to Mr Yock for organising the Mass and many thanks also go to family members who attended.
Interschool Athletics Carnival
Congratulations to Mr Chatt and the Inter School Athletics team for winning the Inter School Carnival on Tuesday. Well done to a number of students who were age champions and or runner up. Mr Chatt’s experience, guidance and training is certainly bearing fruit.
Remembrance Day
A Remembrance Day Service will be held on Friday, 11 November at 9:00am in the undercover area. Year 4G will lead this service and all parents are welcome to attend.
Year 5 Zoo Camp
Our Year 5 students had their Zoo camp last night. I am advised that they had a very memorable experience, something that they will talk about for some time to come. Many thanks go to Mrs Ogg and Mr Beins for giving up their time to make the camp possible.
2023 Staffing
Staffing is almost finalised and staffing placements will be advised in the Week 7 newsletter. A reminder that classes will be shuffled at some stage before the end of the year and that the decision as to which teacher a child is placed with rests with the school. Staff look at a number of criteria in placing children in classes.
2023 Student Leadership
Our Year 5 students will hold their speeches and elections on Monday Week 6 for the Year 6 Student Leadership roles in 2023. I would like to thank Mrs Ogg and Mr Beins for preparing the children for the elections. The new leaders will be announced at the School Thanksgiving Mass in Week 9.
Annual Community Meeting
The School Advisory Council (SAC) and P&F will hold their Annual Community Meetings on
Tuesday, 8 November at 6:00pm in the school undercover area. There will be no
election process for the SAC and we are still looking for a nomination for Vice President for the P&F. Nominations close tomorrow.
God Bless and keep safe.

Principal

All Saints Day / All Souls Day
On All Saints' Day, November 1st, we celebrate all saints who are in heaven. These include all known and unknown saints. It is a holiday rooted in the belief that the world is spiritually connected to heaven. All Saints' Day is considered a holy day of obligation, requiring Catholics to attend Mass.
Our Year 1-6 students attended Mass at 9am to celebrate this special day, led by our student leaders. Just as All Saints' Day celebrates all the saints who have made it to heaven, All Souls' Day honours those who have gone before us.
CAPSS Interschool Athletic Carnival
On Tuesday, 2 November at Len Shearer Reserve, students in Years 3 to 6 attended the CAPSS Inter School Athletics Carnival. The students represented St Columba’s over various race distances, turbo-jav, shot put, long jump, relays and games against 5 schools.
The students were wonderful at cheering the school and its competitors on. At the end of the carnival the school athletics squad was awarded 1st place making this our third year in a row, an outstanding achievement for our students and the school.
A special congratulations to the students below on their individual achievements:
Year 3 Girl Champion - Zara. O
Year 4 Girl Champion - Emily. P
Year 4 Boy Runner Up - Max. H
Year 5 Girl Champion - Milani. M
We are proud of our students’ efforts, displaying their athletic abilities and being excellent representatives of their school. A big thank you to our staff for assisting in either training or at the carnival and our parent helpers who were excellent help in coaching the squad leading up to and at the event.

Year 5 Zoo Camp
Last night our Year 5 students and their teachers stayed over at the Perth Zoo for a truly ‘animal’ experience. We are happy to report that all students and staff survived the night and many positive memories were made. Thank you to our teachers Mr Beins and Mrs Ogg for their excellent preparation and organisation of camp.
Swimming Carnival 2022
On Wednesday, 25 October at Aqualife Centre, students in Years 4 to 6 attended the St Columba’s Swimming Carnival.
The students represented their faction over various swimming strokes, distances, relays and novelty games. The students were wonderful sports people cheering their faction and competitors on.
At the end of the carnival it was McMahon who proved themselves worthy to win the Carnival and trophy. Students that qualify (reserves if required) for the ASCS Inter School Swimming Carnival on will be notified.
A special thank you to any parent helpers and supporters who attended the event.

P&F News
Hi Everyone,
2 sleeps until our big community event, Night in White!! Led by the amazing Year 5 parents, this event is going to be a great chance to come together and let your hair done. We look forward to seeing you there and thank you for your support. Tickets are still available, so don’t miss out.
The P&F are very pleased (and super excited!) to be sponsoring a new initiative in the school for Years 4-6 this year – a Healthy Friendships Workshop.
Western Kids Health has been engaged to run 2 inaugural workshops in 2022 and 2023 with a view to a long-term engagement with the school.
Western Kids Health is a local provider offering pediatric services including Physio, OT, Psych and Dietetic care for children and families.
The focus for the first workshop will be engaging the students in small groups of approx. 15 students per session for 1 hour and working through growth mindset approaches to healthy friendships:
- What do Healthy and Unhealthy friendships look like?
- What avenues to take when experiencing mean behaviour
- The benefits of inclusive play
- Embracing the idea of treating others as you wish to be treated
- Importantly - Resolving conflict in friendships
The P&F is really hopeful of a whole community approach to these workshops; involving the teaching staff, asking parents to follow through and discuss at home and empowering students to grow and make better choices.
Finally, the P&F school disco is tomorrow night. Registrations are still open so please follow the link and sign your children up. Thank you to our Year 4 parents led by the fabulous Brooke Pink for organising this event. The kids are going to have a blast!
Thanks,
Hayley Mitchell
P&F President

Hello St Columba’s Families,
The pictures above sum up well the excitement and great community spirit for Camp Out 2022!

A shout out and thank you to all volunteers and to coordinators, Mel Nasso, Neilsen DeSouza and Alan Godhino your efforts are greatly appreciated.
We are appreciative too of the local businesses that supported us at Park Crafty Meats, Il Panino Bakery and Our Ruby Girl.
