Athletics
Parents and Athletes,
Don't forget that your last chance to purchase your Athletic Wear for the 2020-2021 school year is Monday, June 15th! If you are an incoming 7th or 8th grader signed up for athletics you must have Athletics Wear. If you were previously in Athletics and already have the items needed, you do not need to purchase again if you are able to wear your current items. This is your only chance to purchase your athletics wear. Everyone needs at least one Red Shirt and one pair of Black Shorts, you also need the Black Hoodie and Black Sweatpants. Items will be shipped to West and be handed out on Equipment Handout day in August. Please email Coach Kelder, jkelder@coppellisd.com, or Coach Cantrell, bcantrell@coppellisd.com if you have any questions!

Summer Information
Athletes signed up for Athletics
Welcome to West Athletics for the 2020-2021 School Year! Students, please check with your parents and make sure they see this information!
Linked below is a slide show presentation with information you will need for next year. If you click this link it will direct you to the presentation with myself talking about each slide. There are embedded links in the presentation that you cannot click with that link, but will be live by viewing the attached presentation. I will also place all the the necessary links at the end of this email!
The most important thing in the presentation is how to order your Athletic Clothes for next year. We wear a different required uniform than in PE as 6th Graders. Everyone will need to purchase a pair of the black shorts, red shirt, sweatshirt (hoodie), and sweat pants. You can order as many pairs as you'd like, but you need at least one of each of those. There are other items in the online store as well that you can purchase if you'd like!

Academic Structure- Remainder of the Year
May 11th-15th: Catch up week. Learners can work on any assignments they may have missed or be missing grades for. Anything you see in the gradebook as an "M" means that assignment is missing.
May 18th-21st: Teachers will have fun and OPTIONAL activities setup in schoology for learners to have some fun, reflect, spend time with one another and adults virtually, and wish everyone well as we head into the summer.
We understand that this format may not be for everyone. We know that some parents would like school to have ended weeks ago, and some would like for assignments to continue all summer. We have settled on this plan because we know parents have so much going on trying to help students working at home while also doing their own work and taking care of a family. We feel it is best to give everyone some time to wind down and take some pressure off. We are so appreciative to our parents for the way you have partnered with us and been so incredibly supportive. We are so grateful for each and every one of you and thankful that you are part of our West family!
Student Dropoff and Pickup of Items- Week of May 11th-15th
- Everyone must remain in their car
- Everyone must follow posted directions for moving into pickup/dropoff locations around campus.
- All stations will be located outside the building. No one is allowed inside the building.
- Please show grace and patience to all staff and other parents in cars. We are going to do the best we can to keep things moving smoothly, but this will be new for us as it will be for you.
The schedule for Dropoff and Pickup of Items:
Monday May 11th (3-7 PM)- 6th grade
Tuesday May 12th (5-7 PM)- 7th grade
Thursday May 14th 5-7 PM)- 8th grade
Friday May 15th (9-11 AM)- any grade that couldn't attend previous times
Friday May 15th (5-7 PM)- students in PE or Athletics (all grades)
*Because of traffic volume related to number of students in athletics or PE we needed to offer this as an additional time.
***Please keep reading for further direction.***

Transfer Requests
Due to last year’s Boundary Realignment, many of our current and future middle school learners may not be at their home elementary or middle school campuses this school year because they transferred to a different campus. As a reminder, transfer students must reapply each year to attend a campus that is not their home/zoned campus. Details on this process for 2020-2021 are available at www.coppellisd.com/transfer.
Please note that your child’s school in the Home Access Center where they register for courses for 2020-2021 will be your child's home/zoned middle school campus, which may not be the school he or she currently is attending. You may check for your home/zoned campus at www.coppellisd.com/enrollment.
Campus administrators are not allowed to make any decisions about enrollment or transfers. These decisions are solely that of CISD.
STEAM NIGHT
Friday February 21st
Learners left behind and dropped off early
They must also be picked up by 4 PM each day unless there is a rehearsal or practice or notification from a staff member of needing to be here later than 4 PM.
When they are here outside of that they are not supervised and it poses a safety issue. Additionally, learners left here late in the day requires that we have an administrator here on campus and that is not always possible, causing us to miss other scheduled commitments.
Spring Open House and In-N-Out Food Truck Fundraiser
On Tuesday March 3rd, West will welcome families to visit with your learner's teachers and see the wonderful things they've been working on!
Grab a bite with your family and friends before the Open House . In-N-Out Cookout trailer will be on site starting at 5pm. Tickets must be purchased online and MUST BE PRE_PURCHASED by February 28th @ 5pm. There will be no tickets sold the day of the event. They only allow us a small number of tickets so get yours before they sell out. Vegetarian options are available . Each meal includes hamburger/ grilled cheese, chips and a drink. Don't wait. tickets go on sale on TODAY on the PTO website.

- Students AND staff must stay home with symptoms of flu and should not return to school until they no longer have a fever for at least 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medications.
- Everyone should wash their hands thoroughly with soap and water or use hand sanitizer regularly.
- Continue to teach children to cover their cough with their elbow, and to avoid touching their face.

Lockdown Drill Yesterday (11.7.19)
CMS West conducted a Standard Response Protocol Drill for our students yesterday, specifically on what our students, staff and visitors would do during a lockdown situation.
This link to the Standard Response Protocol Poster http://iloveuguys.org/srp/SRP%20K12%20Poster.pdf, which is in every classroom at CMS West, explains the evacuation procedure.
We encourage you to talk with your child about the lockdown drill yesterday. There also are several resources online to talk to your children about school safety, including the Parent Toolkit at go.coppellisd.com/parenttoolkit.
Thank you for the important role you play in helping our students, our school and our district be better prepared if we should have an actual emergency situation. The safety and security of our students, staff and campus visitors is of the utmost importance to us all at CMS West and Coppell ISD.

Information on Illness
CISD Health Attendance Guidelines
For ultimate success in school, our clinic staff believes students need to be at school and in the classroom. However, there are times a student must stay home! A child that is sick cannot learn effectively and is often unable to participate in a meaningful way. Keeping a sick child home prevents the spread of illness in the school community and allows the child the opportunity to rest and recover.
Please use the following guidelines when deciding if your child should attend school. Contact your campus school nurse for further questions regarding illness and school attendance:
- Fever: An elevated temperature is not in itself an illness, but it is a good indicator the body is fighting an illness or infection. Combined with other symptoms (i.e., sore throat, nausea, or rash), your child may have a contagious disease. Students with a 100º F or higher temperature should stay home until fever-free for 24 hours without the aid of a fever suppressing medication (e.g., Tylenol, Motrin, acetaminophen, or ibuprofen).
- Vomiting or Diarrhea: Many viruses and bacterias cause disease that involves vomiting and diarrhea. A student should be free of vomiting or diarrhea for 24 hours without the use of medication.
- Frequent Cough: Staying home or seeking medical attention may be necessary when a student has a cough that continues or worsens. Coughing can be a symptom of a serious infectious disease, asthma, or a secondary infection.
- Strep and Scarlet Fever: These bacterial infections can be passed to others. Signs include sudden sore throat with fever, stomachache, and headache. With scarlet fever, a rash usually shows up within 12 to 48 hours. Call your healthcare provider for any of these signs. Your child should stay home until he/she does not have a fever and has been taking antibiotics for 24 hours.
- Flu: Flu is a virus that can quickly be passed to others. The main symptom of the flu is fever and can include body aches, chills, cough and congestion, sore throat, or vomiting. Your child should stay home until fever-free for 24 hours without the aid of a fever suppressing medication (e.g., Tylenol, Motrin, acetaminophen, or ibuprofen).
