The Weekly Word from CDS FP - January 20-January 30, 2019
Looking Back
Hi Everyone,
I’m writing from Detroit, en route to Iowa. Each year representatives from our school attend international job fairs. This is how many of our fantastic teachers have joined CDS over the years.
Students began writing MAP tests this week and most will conclude during the week. After we return from the Lunar break, there will be a few students who need to complete some exams. We expect results to be shared with students and parents on approximately February 18th.
This past weekend CDS was host to a Curriculum Summit. Educators from all over the world attended. It occurred all day Saturday and Sunday. Several teachers and administrators from CDS not only attended, but also presented. And one of the most impressive things about the weekend were Mr. Baker’s grade 4 students! They volunteered for the event, and so many summit participants commented about how fantastic our student volunteers were. What a great way for the kids to assist their community, to show their great character, to collaborate with their peers and adults running the summit; opportunities to engage with adults, to hear problems and to think critically and arrive at solutions was excellent. Well done, grade four volunteers - you should feel proud!
Apologies for not sending the newsletter out on the weekend - we were quite busy with the summit on Saturday and Sunday, but it was worth it, as teachers and administrators learned more about curriculum, assessment, reporting - all significant and relevant topics to our school.
Thank you to all those participated in another successful Uniform-Free Friday. So many students participated and showed great community. We aim for these funds to support students’ education in underprivileged areas of the world.
Last Thursday, our students visited two museums on our FP field trip. One was the musical history museum and the other was a Korean history museum. Students represented CDS very well; they were considerate and respectful guests of the places they visited. A highlight was getting to watch and listen to all the students being able to try such a wide variety of musical instruments.
Finally, way back on Saturday the 19th, Mr. Trongsgard and I accompanied a brave battalion of two floor hockey teams to the grade 234 tournament at Chadwick. Floor hockey can be full of physical challenges, and the students faced many difficulties, but they had a strong growth mindset and displayed exceptional sportsmanship. One team even finished in 2nd place! Congrats everyone who participated, and thank you so much to the FP PTA for supporting the event, and for being there to cheer on the players.
Our hiring team returns during the Lunar break after meeting teachers from around the world - some of whom will be additions to our 2019/2020 faculty.
I hope you have a fantastic holiday!
Educationally Yours,
Mr. Hill

In the Spotlight
This week we are featuring Volunteering, Floor Hockey, K, and Grade 3. Thank you, Mr. Baker, Mr. Tronsgard, Ms. Pabon and Ms. Minot!
Floor Hockey with Mr. Tronsgard
On Saturday, 15 CDS floor hockey players took part in our first ever floor hockey tournament. We had a team representing the Grade 2-3 division and a team representing the Grade 4-5 division. The day included 5 regular games and one playoff game for each team. Students were encouraged to take what they covered in floor hockey lab and apply it against teams from Chadwick and CMIS. Both teams improved a great amount throughout the day and had a lot of fun. The Grade 2-3 team finished the day finishing in 2nd place, as they lost a close game in the finals which went all the way to a shootout. Great job everyone! I look forward to the next event.
Grade 4 Volunteers with Mr. Baker
Last weekend, Grade 4 students volunteered to help out visiting teachers who attended the Atlas Curriculum Summit. I was extremely proud of our students who demonstrated maturity and great character as they helped teachers and administrators with directions and tech issues. Way to go, Grade 4 students! Thank you again for helping out and making the summit extra special. Here is a tweet of acknowledgement from the Curriculum Summit organizer and also from our Middle School Director, Mr. Scoville!
Kindergarten with Ms. Pabon
In kindergarten, we joined to an international challenge called 100 acts of kindness. Students have been learning that kindness can be found in simple things such as opening the door for someone, helping a friend, sharing toys, saying something good about someone, telling a joke, or just smiling at someone.
Asher commented: “We should be kind all the times, being kind is fun”. In addition to that, we have been practicing counting by 10s, so every time that 10 acts of kindness are accomplished, students pop a balloon. Our goal is to pop the 100 balloon soon.
Grade 3 with Ms. Minot
This week we have been focusing on reading nonfiction text and writing nonfiction books. During reading students have been learning text features and how to identify the main idea. Jaehee exclaimed, “I finally get how to find the main idea!” In writing students have been taking what they have learned in reading and applying it to their nonfiction book. They are busy planning and drafting pages.
Before they move on to the next page, they have to make sure they have included the main idea and supporting details.
