GLVN Bulletin
News for GLVN Volunteers (Thông Tin cho Thầy Cô GLVN)
April 28, 2017
Wow -- there is so much going on these past few weekends during GLVN.
Please lift up extra prayer intentions for our Lớp 10 and Lớp 2 classes.
We have 32 candidates who will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation this weekend! Please join us at the Mass if you can -- Saturday, April 29 @ 10 am @ the St. Paul Cathedral.
We have 49 lớp 2 students who will be receiving their First Confessions on May 6 during a Family Retreat Day at our church. New this year, we have invited the lớp 2 students' parents to join us for the retreat day to grow in their faith with their child as they receive their first Confession and prepare for First Communion. We hope this effort to integrate parents into their special day will be something positive for the families and for GLVN in the future too, so please pray for this plan to go according to God's will.
The same 49 lớp 2 students will have their First Communion during our 1:30 Mass on May 14.
So lots and lots of celebrations ahead of us! Please read more in this bulletin for one more special celebration ....
In Christ,
Chi
Important Info About May GLVN Schedule
In case you missed this important news last week .... :-)
Thank you so much for your ongoing input on so many things this past year. I feel like we have made a lot of positive changes and good progress in our program! We are so blessed to have everyone on this GLVN team!
Ban Điều Hành met before Easter to figure out details for our last weeks of school (yes! It is almost upon us!). There is a slight change from the original GLVN schedule for the last 2 weeks of school based on our resources and manpower and other parish conflicts. We appreciate your support and flexibility.
Here is an outline of what will be happening in May in detail so that you are well-prepared from your end and we have your full support to make these things happen for the kids (and for each other).
May 7 – as previously communicated – all classes should have this as your final test day. We need to have the final test on this day to give you enough time to grade the tests and identify your top students for the awards by May 21 (our last day of school). More details on the award categories and stuff will be shared before the final testing day.
May 14 – on the original GLVN schedule we planned to have this as a “Service Day” for the entire school since you are done with tests and teaching lessons. The idea is that by using their hands and feet to do small things to make our parish a beautiful space for worship and learning about God, we hope to instill a sense of ownership and pride in this church/school space as their second home J
This is still part of the plan, but we are also incorporating the end-of-school year celebration with the kids on this day. We will still need you to be with your classes, but the activities will be planned out for you and your students for the whole day. We just need to you to guide and have fun with your students in doing these service projects. Lunch will be provided for the whole school this day. More details to come.
May 21 – Last day of classes – since we incorporated the all-school celebration on May 14 as part of our service day, here’s the thinking for the last day of classes.
- 10:00-11:15 – Students in classes with teachers for last day of fun as a class (Teachers – this is up to you on what you want to do with this last day. GLVN will provide each class a $50 budget to purchase what you need for a mini-class celebration with your students. Please submit your receipts to c.Nga in the GLVN office on May 21.)
- 11:15-11:45 – Lunch as normal (students/teachers buy lunch in the cafeteria as usual)
- 11:45-12:00 – Gather back in classrooms and then head over to church for the awards ceremony and Mass
Please let Chi know if you have any questions, concerns, ideas to make these last few weeks fun and meaningful for the students and each other!
An Important Celebration....
For the teacher workshop – the consensus was to try to get this workshop in early in the summer so that feedback from the past year is still fresh in everyone’s minds. In looking at the parish calendar for June – it is completely booked with parish activities and TNTT activities (1/3 of our teachers are Huynh Truong, so we have to take the TNTT activities into account too).
So here is the best we could com up with to be able to get feedback while it’s still fresh in your minds:
May 21 – after mass from 2:45-3:45 – Teacher 2016-2017 School Year Wrap Up meeting (focused only on the feedback about the past year, and needs that you see for the upcoming year). Using this information, BDH will use June to prepare all our plans and needs for the next school year, and then we will hold our full-day teacher workshop to prepare for the new school year in mid- to late-July (when there are no other parish events). I know we may miss a few people when we do the workshop in the middle of the summer, but it seems to be the only option we have to avoid conflicts with other parish events.
And the big important celebration ....
After the 5/21 meeting, we will have a Teacher Celebration and we invite everyone to stay for a special dinner together to thank one another for a blessed year. Please save the date and stay with us for this dinner 5/21 from 4-6 p.m.
I know it's the end of the year, and we all are exhausted ... but it would mean a lot to me to have you all there for this special dinner. You have been an important part of making this year successful for the parish and the students. I am grateful for all your support, encouragement and hard work this year, especially as I took on this new role, and I would love to spend a nice, relaxing dinner together (not thinking about teaching or planning or organizing!) with you to thank God and thank one another.
Official invites will be coming with more details.
Background About the Challenge
This year, students will earn tickets, and they can exchange them any time throughout the GLVN Challenge for all sorts of fun prizes. It's a little like Chuck E Cheese. This way the students are really just challenging themselves (versus competing against others). Last year's competition got a little to competitive, and so we wanted to change it up a little this year to keep it fun.
Challenge activities will be handed out before the Mass time, and are always due the following Sunday to earn the points for the specific activities. No late submissions will be accepted.

Weekly challenge worksheets will also be posted online at https://www.smore.com/4avnt
