Westwood Wire

October 5, 2021

Dear Westwood Families,

As we approach the end of the first quarter, we continue to focus on building strong relationships with all members of Westwood to ensure a sense of belonging, acceptance and responsibility for maintaining our collective safety and high quality instructional environments.

In reflection of August and September, we are excited about the arrival of our Wolf mascot costume, the start of accelerated instruction, the intentionality of our professional learning communities focused on student learning and outcomes, the completion of BOY MAP testing, our campus wide celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, minute meetings with our counselors, fine arts performances and a successful start to football and volleyball seasons.

As we enter October, we continue our focus on excellence in learning and are thrilled with our partnership and work with PTA to create events where we come together as a community, provide an outdoor lunch option for our students, and support our work for the MST Ed-Talks on November 4th.

Thank you for taking time to read this newsletter and for our continued collaboration to support all members of our Westwood community.

Sincerely,

Katie Mottram

Principal

Carpool Lane

We have recently received some complaints from our campus neighbors. Please follow the directions below to facilitate a safe and effective arrival and dismissal process.

Reminder to all parents: Please DO NOT pick up or drop off students in the RED highlighted areas (Meandering Way, La Cosa Dr. & Spring Creek Rd.). We have received several complaints from our neighbors regarding student safety. Students may only be picked up and dropped off in the YELLOW highlighted areas. This is to ensure the safety of all our students. Please do not stop on Arapaho Rd. or in the middle carpool lane of the drive in - this causes excessive traffic. Cars are not allowed in the back circle drive - this is reserved for busses.

Student Drop-off begins at 7:45am. Students dropped off before this time are not supervised by staff.

Food Deliveries

Please do not send your student lunch though a third party. Food deliveries from third parties such as Door Dash, Favor, Uber eats, etc are becoming a security hazard on campus and a disruption to instruction during the school day.

We ask that if you must deliver lunch to your student you do so personally or by someone listed on the students emergency card.

Students will NOT be called out of class to pick up food, they must pick it up on their way to lunch before the bell rings.

Student ID's

All students have been issued a student ID. These must be worn by all students before entering the building as stated in the Student Code of Conduct:

Students are required to wear their badges every day. Badges must be visible on a lanyard around their neck. Replacement badges can be purchased in the Library for $5.00. If a student forgets their badge, they will need to purchase a temporary badge in the cafeteria before school starts. Temporary badges are 50 cents. If a student does not have 50 cents, they may obtain a temporary badge and will be issued a lunch detention.

Q1 Grades

Q1 grades close next Friday October 15th. Teachers may begin posting grades on October 7th, please remind your students to turn in all assignments before this date.

Q1 report cards are tentative to be published in Focus on October 19. If you do not have a parent Focus account follow the link below for more information on how to create one.

Household Family Data - PLEASE COMPLETE

It is very important that RISD families complete this Household Family Data in order for RISD schools to receive Title I and State Compensatory Education funding. If eligible, this funding directly benefits your child's school through additional employees, and resources like tutoring services, additional technology, and professional training for teachers at your child’s school. RISD wants to continue to provide these important learning supports at our eligible schools, but that is dependent on parent/guardian assistance through completion of this form.

Families who have not completed this should have received a text reminder to complete this.

From the Counselors

The counselors have completed minute meetings with all our Westwood Wolves. We really enjoyed getting to talk with each student and get feedback on how we can help them this year. Our Westwood Counseling Team will follow-up with students based on the information we received during our meetings.

Mrs. Ruttenburg and Mrs. Scoggins will be creating groups to work with students on stress. If you would like your student to work with a counselor on their stress, please complete this link (Stress Group) to refer. Groups will meet once a week for 3-4 weeks and target specific student needs.
