QUOTE OF THE WEEK!
FSA Middle School Science Olympiad Places 1st at Chattahoochee S.O. Tournament
FSA Middle School Science Olympiad students took first place at the Chattahoochee Invitational on Saturday, beating 39 teams from Georgia and Alabama, including perennial rival Dodgen Middle School. FSA students earned a total of 70 medals in 22 of the 23 Science Olympiad events.
Science Olympiad head coaches Gloria Stathos and Pam Walsh were very pleased with the team’s performance. This tournament was originally scheduled for December but was postponed due to a snowstorm. Two other tournaments scheduled for January were also cancelled due to snow and ice, so this was only the second tournament students have participated in. “We try to compete in as many tournaments as possible because each tournament is a learning experience for our students,” said Gloria Stathos. “This year has been frustrating. In addition to tournament cancellations, we’ve lost a lot of preparation time from school closing due to the weather.”
“At our first tournament in November, Dodgen beat us by two points. At this tournament, we beat them by two points,” explained Pam Walsh. “It would be hard to find two more evenly matched teams.” FSA next competes at the Regional Tournament on February 10. Dodgen will be competing in a different Regional, so the teams will not face off again until the State Tournament in March. The top two teams in the state will be invited to the National Science Olympiad Tournament.
“Even though our students did remarkably well, we still have lots of room for improvement. We’ll be working with students on the finer details of their academic and building events to prepare for the Regional, State, and hopefully National Tournament,” said Mrs. Walsh.

An important message from the nurse about this cold and flu season
LET’S HELP PREVENT COLDS,THE FLU AND OTHER INFECTIOUS ILLNESSES FROM SPREADING THIS WINTER
As the school bell rings and we are headed back to class, the threat of colds, the flu and other infectious illnesses are a major concern, especially since there are confirming reports from the Department of Public Health (DPH) that flu activity is increasing statewide, along with the number of hospitalizations due to flu-related illness. Unfortunately, we had a few students out with the flu just before the snow break.
What can we do to help prevent the spread of the flu and other infectious illnesses? The first thing is simple...wash your hands frequently! Using hand sanitizer is also an option when soap and running water are not available. However, select a hand sanitizer that is alcohol based (and as with any soap, always supervise its use with small children). Research has shown that frequent hand washing and regular use of hand sanitizers in school settings can reduce absenteeism by as much as 20% (plus) in students and staff, and increased attendance by students and staff translates to improved academic performance!
Also, follow the school's standard procedure for routine cleaning and disinfecting. Flu viruses are relatively fragile, so standard cleaning and disinfecting practices are sufficient to remove or kill them.
Here are some additional things you can do to prevent the spread of the flu and other illnesses:
- Teach children not to share personal items like drinks, food, eating utensils, or other personal items like towels, combs, brushes.
- Properly dispose of used tissues when coughing and sneezing, and use your elbow, arm or sleeve when coughing or sneezing instead of the hand.
- Wash athletic practice clothing each day,and shower after any contact sports.
- Stay home if you are sick especially during the first days of illness when symptoms are the most severe and the infection is most contagious. Return to work or school only when symptoms are improving and when you’ve had no fever for at least 24 hrs.
- Get vaccinated. Vaccination is the best protection against contracting the flu.
- Please allow students to watch topics on hand washing and the flu.

six flags read to succeed program is back
We are excited to share that the elementary students will participate in the Six Flags Read to Succeed Program again this school year.
If you are not familiar with this program, students need to read a minimum of 6 hours, log their time and get parent and teacher approval. Teachers then log student's time in their accounts and students are awarded a one day pass to Six Flags. Teachers that have at least 8 students participate, also get a ticket.
Students will bring home a parent letter and reading log.
The due date back to teachers is Feb. 23rd.

Home Visits - A Fun Way to meet your teachers!
Home visits are a casual way for your child to spend time with his/her teacher in the comfort of their home. Teachers enjoy having a chance to see children in this comfortable environment, doing whatever makes them most happy and spend time with children and their parents outside of a regular school day.
Simply email junal@fultonscienceacademy.org with some suggested dates/times, as well as your students' name(s) and homeroom assignments. Ms. Unal will be in touch to confirm final details.
