Adult and Community Education
"In The Know" 5/2/2017
A Message from the Leadership Team
This week Lena Palonco a Dunkin Donut’s District Manager responsible for hiring employees at nine of our area restaurants visited the Lorenzo Walker Technical College Campus. Lena met with 16 ESOL students who had an opportunity to learn about employment opportunities at area Dunkin’ Donuts. Those interested filled out applications and were interviewed on the spot. Alejandro Anderson a day-time ESOL instructor helped coordinate the event. Lena’s feedback was frank and valuable. Lena was impressed by the communication skills of the students and said language was not a barrier to employment at Dunkin Donuts for any of the students she interviewed. With this good news came an opportunity. Lena indicated that students lacked soft skills and basic interviewing skills. For years adult education has been focused on one main objective: teaching English, and we have done this well. However, with the new state and federal mandates we need to help students gain not only LCP’s (improve their English skills), but also to prepare them for additional educational opportunities and employment opportunities. We have been planning a pathway for students to follow in order to reach these objectives and have written them into our 2017-2018 grant. We will be introducing “occupational clusters” starting fall 2017. Lena presently has one of Alejandro’s students working in her stores and has identified two more. We hope to build on this relationship and Lena has agreed to hold more interviews on campus when we are ready.

Click here for the entire resource. It's also available in Spanish.
Now that we know the basics, let's move on to Buying a home.
This week let's look at The Cost of Home Ownership.Community Resources
Community organizations are a great place to find helpful resources, places that can help us with sometimes difficult situations. Community organizations depend on volunteers to help provide those resources. ONE of the very real ways to become part of a community is to become a volunteer within that community. You interact, speak and assist those living in your own backyard. Volunteering is a great way to practice our skills and also can be a great way to look for future employment.
This week we'll take a look at the Microenterprise program offered by Goodwill Industries. Goodwill's MicroEnterprise program provides aspiring small business owners with the skills they need to succeed as entrepreneurs and become more independent. A representative from the Microenterprise program offered by Goodwill Industries will be available at Lorenzo Walker Technical College, this Friday, May 5th from 11-12 in Mustang Alley! Please stop by and find out more information!

ESOL Teacher Resources
It is exciting to see when I visit the sites, all the wonderful teaching that is taking place! I love how Lin Rhines goes over and beyond and extends the learning into project based lessons. I loved seeing Adele Solimine working one-on one with her students while others were working independently. I like how teachers at LWTC have been using the whiteboards for getting the students ready for the Listening portion of the CASAS test. Great Job to ALL teachers!! Happy Teacher Appreciation Week!
