Little Prairie Primary School
October 2023
From the Principal's Desk
Happy fall everybody! It is hard to believe that we are almost one month into the 2023-2024 school year. I hope this newsletter finds you and your child(ren) enjoying the start of the year, and off to a fun, challenging, positive start. We have had a great first few weeks learning routines and expectations, and becoming familiar with our environment.
In addition to practicing behaviors that are respectful, responsible, safe and caring, we will continue to acknowledge our monthly themes to help reinforce these concepts, as well build additional skills in our students.
Our monthly themes for the year are:
September- Respect
October- Kindness
November- Responsibility
December- Self-Control
January- Empathy
February- Honesty
March- Problem-Solving
April- Caring
May- Cooperation
If your child displays behavior at home aligned to our monthly themes, don’t forgot to fill out a bucket drop, explaining their bucket filling behavior. We will acknowledge it over the announcements!
This is the time of year that we spend time getting to know what your student’s academic skills are, so that we can best meet their needs instructionally. During the last few weeks, all 5K, 1st , and 2nd grade students have participated in FastBridge Curriculum Based Measures in the areas of Literacy and Math. Administration of an early literacy screener is a state requirement and measures children’s knowledge of important literacy fundamentals. Fast Bridge results will be used to guide teachers in the development of instructional activities and practices and will allow us to better address individual student needs.
An additional point of communication on student progress this fall comes in the form of Parent Teacher Conferences, which are scheduled for October 19th and October 24th from 3:15-7:15. Stay tuned for communication in the next week or so regarding signing up for a conference time slot.
We will continue to work together toward the growth and success of our students and community.
Thank you for a great start to a new year!

October's PBIS theme is KINDNESS!
* We are working on earning our first school-wide reward (our PBIS t-shirts). We will be wearing these shirts on Mondays.
* You can print and fill out a bucket drop for your child to return to school when they demonstrate kindness (or other bucket filling behavior) at home!
ALL students need an extra outfit!
Here are just a few other reasons they may need a change of clothes:
* get wet while outside at recess
* clothes get a hole or rip in them while playing
* spill food/drink at lunch
* bloody nose
We do not always have the right size or preferred style of clothing in the health room for students needing to change their clothes; therefore, to ensure your child is comfortable in the event they require a change of clothes, please send a complete outfit to be kept in their backpack or cubby (socks, underwear, pants & shirt). Thank you!

October Reading Calendar
Hello Families!
Each month, your child will receive one of these blank reading calendars. In elementary school, we do not typically send “work” home, but we do encourage at least 20 minutes of reading for every child, at any age, each night, instead, as homework, because research shows that establishing a positive reading routine like this will give children such a huge academic advantage.
For all of the reasons the chart explains, AND because reading with your child allows good, quality time spent together, please consider making reading at home with your child, everyday, a part of your family routine. If you and your child already read together routinely, please know what an
important example you’re setting, and proudly take a look at the information below to see what an amazing advantage you are giving your child!
We realize that sometimes there are circumstances that prevent families from being able to read to their children everyday, but having a caregiver or a different family member read to/with these children might be another option. We also understand that there are some adults who wish they had
stronger literacy skills. If you know an adult who might be interested in free adult literacy tutoring services, please contact Cari McBurney, who can put you in touch with this support. It is our goal here at ETCSD to support you and your family in all of your literacy needs!
Thank you!
