GMO's are Bad
GMO's May Be Unhealthy
Some people who are against GMO's think that the new genes added into plants could carry some allergens and be harmful to those who eat it. They think that new genes that are introduced (fish genes implanted into a bean plant) are more harmful than the regular bean plant. Also the bacteria in our body could pick up this new gene and it may be able to withstand all the antibiotics.
GMO's Hurt Small Farmers
Critics of GMO's believe that these new plants will urge small farmers to turn buy more land and expand their territory. GMO's would be more expensive than regular crops, and would make the gap between the rich and the poor even more wider. For example, many India farmers spent more money on GMO's and were forced to pay off their debts, when their debt was increasing. Also, farmers of monocultures are in grave danger to be attacked by pests that could kill a lot of their crops.
GMO's Could Harm The Environment
Critics also think that GMO's are new experiments with new harmful effects on the environment that have not been studied much. A study at Cornell University showed that 56% of monarch larvae lived when given milkweed plant with GMO pollen to eat. However when give a milkweed with natural pollen, all of them lived. Also, as mosquitoes became immune to DDT, people believe that there will be super bugs that will become immune to the GMO's protection. On the extreme level, viruses could even take hold of the GMO's DNA and be harmful towards humans.
GMO's Go Against Nature
Many people who rival the idea that GMO's should be used state that messing with organisms DNA is not natural. It almost makes humans "God" in that fact that humans can control the genes of plants. They say that this should be up to God, and God only.
Bio-Tech Companies Only Care For Themselves Not People Or Nature
The critics of GMO's state that the researchers develop these new crops to gain profit only for themselves. They also do not consider health, socioeconomic, or environmental hazards. Also the GMO producers put their efforts in high-volume crops such as soybeans, corn, and cotton, but not in the crops that many LDC's grow. Soon the critics believe that the distribution of food will be in the power of the GMO's hands.
