A Note from the Nurse

Helpful Hint!!! If your child has had a visit to the Med Check/ER because of an injury and the Dr has put restrictions in place – Please ask for a written Dr’s Order listing those restrictions. (The attending health care professional is the person to write the order, and it can be a difficult to request after the day/time of treatment with the facility’s staff scheduling.) District policy only allows for 3 consecutive days of missing regular scheduled activities (ie: PE, music, recess) without a Dr’s note.

When you are cleaning out your child’s closet and your child has outgrown slightly worn elastic waist/stretch pants, please consider donating them to the clinic. Accidents happen during the day!

1st grade vision screening will occur on Monday, Oct 26th. The Dr’s and staff from Fishers Eye Care are donating their services to test all our 1st grade students that day so please remember to have your child bring/wear their glasses (or contacts). Look for the Dr’s results in your child’s back pack.

Media Center Volunteers

It is another busy year in the Harrison Parkway Media Center! Students are coming in every day for library lessons, book exchange and research.

I can always use more smiling faces and helping hands. If you have some free time during the day, please consider being a Library Media Center Volunteer. The parent volunteers help with a variety of tasks. You may check items in or out, shelve books, assist students in locating books on the shelves, make copies, or assist with processing new books. Questions? Please contact Mrs. Kristin Sager, Library Media Specialist, at ksager@hse.k12.in.us or 915-4210, ext. 1792.

If you would like to help, please make sure that you have a current background check on file and that you have completed the HSE Anti-bullying Training Webinar. These links are found on the Harrison Parkway Elementary website, under Quick Links : http://www.hse.k12.in.us/hpe/home.aspx

Student Arrival and Dismissal Procedures - Safety

Students are to be dropped off and picked up at the front of the drive by the school's front doors. Please have your child exit from the passenger side of all vehicles. Students should stay in their seatbelts/safety seats until your vehicle has come to a complete stop and your child is ready to get out of the car. Please only dismiss and receive your child at the front of the school. Do not release students from the back of the line so they must walk past other cars releasing children. It is imperative that cars remain in a single line along the curb. Please do not attempt to pass cars releasing students as this creates an unsafe situation for our children. Please use extreme caution in our parking lot and drive in the morning and afternoon, as both are high-traffic times. Thank you for your part in keeping our children safe.

Online School Directory

The online school directory is now available to all families in Skyward. This year the directory is based on an opt-in model. Families must choose to show their contact information in order to be visible in the directory.

To opt-in, click on "My Account" in the upper right corner of your Family Access account. From there, check the boxes for the information you wish to make visible under the School Directory section and then Save. Families can make changes to this section anytime throughout the school year.

Sign In Procedures

As a reminder, the sign in procedure at Harrison Parkway includes signing your child in or out using a computer. If you are signing your child out of school, please have your driver's license with you, as you will need it to complete the sign-out process.

Attendance Line Voicemail

If your child will be absent from school, please call the HPE Attendance Line by 9:00 a.m. at 915-4210. If you know in advance that your child will be absent, you may call the attendance line's voicemail anytime and leave a message. If you know your student will be absent for more than two school days for any reason other than illness, we ask that you complete a Prearranged Absence Form (available in the HPE office) at least one week prior to the absence.

Student attendance at HPE is vitally important. Please make every attempt possible to plan appointments and vacations outside of school hours. Regular attendance improves student performance and is expected as an integral part of our state mandated School Improvement Plan.

Lost & Found

Harrison Parkway Elementary has a Lost & Found located outside of the Music Room for any lost items. If you child may have lost something at school, please check the Lost & Found. At the end of each month, we will be donating any leftover items to charities that serve people in need. Thank you!

Hello, Harrison Parkway volunteers!

THANK YOU for an awesome cookie dough fundraiser…we sold almost 400 more tubs this year than last year. That is amazing! Your efforts go a long way to help teachers in our building, and we truly appreciate your support.

As you know, a few things are happening next week: Cookie dough pick-up (Tuesday) and Parent/Teacher conferences.

>>>Re: Cookie dough pick up

The following is from Alissa Jerrell, our cookie dough fundraiser chair:

“A friendly reminder to HPE families that cookie dough pick up night is Tuesday, October 20, from 5:30-7:30 pm! Any cookie dough that is not picked up has to go in my freezer, and I have very limited space to store it!!! Thank you so much!

Also, I am looking for ADULT helpers for Tuesday, October 20. (No kids, please).

This year will be different (hopefully easier!), as all orders will arrive PRE-SORTED by customer order!

3:15-5:00 -- We will be setting up and organizing PRE-SORTED cookie dough orders.

5:00-8:00 -- We will help families pick up their orders followed by a light clean up.

If you are available to help, please sign up on Volunteer Spot http://vols.pt/Pv4NAa or contact Alissa at alissaml@hotmail.com or 770-6758. If you can stay the entire time, that’s wonderful! If you can stay for one shift, that’s great too! ANY amount of time is appreciated!! We’ll take your help for whatever amount of time you can share!”

Just a note about picking up cookie dough…if you are also at the school that night for parent/teacher conferences, you will need to exit the building and then re-enter at the appropriate door (i.e., the door between the cafeteria and gym will be locked).

Parents, please note, early pick up WILL NOT be possible. The truck arrives that afternoon and we need time to sort orders & prepare for pick up beginning at 5:30 pm.

Pick up will be in the HPE gym. Door 3 will be the ONLY entrance available for pick up. All other doors into the gym will be locked- including those from the cafeteria.

>>>Re: parent/teacher conferences

HPE has a tradition of providing meals to the teachers during parent/teacher conferences; this tradition is sponsored by the Staff Appreciation Committee. Please check http://vols.pt/Pv4NAa for a list of items the Committee needs to feed the teachers. If you have questions, please contact Kristin Robinson at robinson.kristin186@gmail.com.

Other noteworthy items:

>>>If you ordered a paper directory, they will be sent home soon.

>>>Classroom winners of the Box Top contest are: Lundberg, Upwards, Bauters, Bohlman, Wargel, Miller

>>>Upcoming Dine to Donate opportunities: Jaggers - Nov 3 and Nov 11

>>>HSE Superintendent will be at our next PTO meeting (November 10, 6:30 p.m., cafeteria): Dr. Bourff plans to share his observations over the past eight plus months. His observations have translated into three distinct suggestions for a referendum. Dr. Bourff would like for the staff/community to tell him if he has an accurate account OR are there other needs to be considered.

>>>Please contact Joelle Andrew-Mohr if you make items we can sell in our annual holiday shoppe (typically sold for $8 or less). jomandre@indiana.edu.

>>>See attached for a fun opportunity sponsored by Mathnasium. Trimathlon is a FREE event (this Saturday) for participants, and Mathnasium will donate $10 back to each participant's respective school. Last year, they donated $20 back to Harrison Parkway Elementary.

At present, both the co-president and co-vice president positions on the HPE PTO executive board are vacant. A candidate for each of these positions is presented to the HPE community now for election at the November 10 General PTO meeting:

Carol Schmitt will be on the ballot for co-president, and Amy Dilks will be on the ballot for co-vice president.

Parents, please watch for an e-mail with a link to sign up for a spot to help provide dinner for our teachers and staff on the evenings of October 20th and 21st during parent teacher conferences. If you do not receive an e-mail but would still like to sign up please go to http://vols.pt/Pv4NAa. Thank you for the your help!

Fishers Nickel Plate District Transforms into Halloween Village for Boo Bash

City offers safe trick-or-treating alongside opportunities to connect with local businesses

Mark the calendar, plan a costume, and get ready for the return of Boo Bash in the Nickel Plate District. Once again, the City of Fishers is transforming the Nickel Plate District into a Halloween village to offer safe trick-or-treating, live music, games and activities, and even a costume contest for children under 12 and families. Boo Bash returns on Friday, October 23rd from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., and is free for anyone to attend.

Roughly 50 local businesses and organizations will be represented at trick-or-treat booths during the event, which means while children enjoy playing a game or getting a piece of candy, parents can enjoy learning more about services available in the community. Complimentary Pat’s Philly Pretzels and hot chocolate will be available at the concession stand on a first come, first served basis throughout the event. Boo Bash also features a costume contest for infants through 12 year old children. This year, the costume contest also includes a family category, so start planning now!

Boo Bash is a free event that welcomes Fishers residents and those in surrounding communities. Those attending the event are encouraged to visit the website and plan ahead; 116th Street will be closed at the railroad crossing for construction during the event. The detour map will assist families in planning their route and parking around the Nickel Plate District. Those attending are also encouraged to share their photos using the hashtag #BooBash during the event.

About Boo Bash:
Fishers Parks & Recreation strives to connect businesses with residents during diverse, community-wide events. 60 vendor booths are available for local businesses and organizations. Anyone interested in hosting a booth are encouraged to contact Lorna Steele at steelel@fishers.in.us, today.

Fishers DPW Invites Residents Behind-the-Scenes for a free Open House on Oct. 27th

It’s that time of year again when Fishers Department of Public Works (DPW) raises the overhead doors, leaves the keys in the trucks and invites residents of all ages to explore their department. On Tuesday, Oct. 27 from 5 to 8 p.m., families will have the opportunity to learn more about the many services this department provides to Fishers residents. The DPW Open House is free to attend, and scout groups working on their badges are welcome.

“Our team loves the opportunity to connect with residents during the open house,” stated DPW Director, Eric Pethtel. “It’s not uncommon to see DPW staff painting alongside children, explaining the machinery and enjoying the open house just as much as our guests do.”

Light refreshments will be served during the event, and children can paint-a-plow or street sign that they might see around the city in the future. Fishers DPW includes four divisions; street maintenance, park maintenance, facility maintenance and water quality, and staff from each division will be able to explain the role they play in keeping our community vibrant.

The Fishers DPW garage is located at 10200 Eller Road and parking is available onsite. Attendees are welcome to stop by any time, and parents are encouraged to bring a camera! Connect with the department on Twitter @FishersDPW for reminders leading up to the open house.
