Welcome to Kyle's Open House!

Earthquake PBL
The Earthquake PBL project was a project where we were put into groups to design a house for Tony Stark that could withstand an earthquake. We then built the model out of popsicle sticks, toothpicks, string, clay and straws. Our dirving question was, How can we as structural engineers, construct a two story house in California for Tony Stark that can withstand seismic activity?
My Team's Design
My team's design had a square base made up of popsicle sticks. We used clay to stick them together. We used more popsicle stocks for the roof and walls. The clay secured them so that they wouldn't break. String was used as crossbraces for more protection from earthquakes.
What I Learned
What Inlearned through this project was how a home can withstand an earthquake. Homes made of brick and stronger materials will have a harder time breaking. Tension ties and crossbraces add more support to the home. I also learned where earth quakes are strongest in California. The closer a city is to the San Andreas Fault, the stronger the earthquake will feel.
