Winter Extravaganza
Pre-K
Pre-k has been very busy learning this year. Some children have transitioned back into learning at school. We started with all of our rituals and routines. They have done a wonderful job! The Heights to Home children have settled nicely with the change in teachers (for some). We are looking forward to the weeks ahead getting to know each other!
Pre-k has been doing work in our clothing study. We are learning to dress ourselves, name articles of clothing, talking about how different clothing is for different weather, and working on different fasteners. It has been a great unit.
We are now transitioning to our Sand study! All of the Pre-k children are learning about different types of sand, different places we find sand, how sand feels and what we can do with sand! There are so many ways children learn through their senses. In literacy, they can hide different items in sand, and name them when they find them. In math, they can count items found in sand. The children have already started to enjoy kinetic sand. They use descriptive words to tell us how it feels, looks, smells and sounds. We are excited about continuing the learning through the month.
Kindergarten
First Grade
First graders have been engaging in fun February activities, while working hard and learning a lot. For Groundhog’s Day, students predicted whether or not the groundhog would see his shadow. I don’t think anyone could have predicted our cold February weather. Despite the cold weather, our classes warmed their hearts with Valentine’s Day activities. Our February fun continued with a 100th day of school celebration. During our fun in February, students have been learning different strategies for subtracting numbers, measuring the length and height of objects, and reading and responding to books through maps, charts, pictures and writing.
Science
Hello Valley View families! We have had such a fun and busy year learning about science and the world around us. During third quarter we have many new and exciting units to explore. Third grade is learning about measurement and all of the things people measure every day. Third graders can practice measuring all types of objects at home using standard units or non-standard units. Have fun measuring length, weight, time, or anything else at home! Fourth and fifth graders are having fun conducting experiments and asking questions about the world around us. We will be busy this quarter doing many investigations and working with hands-on experiments! Students should keep working hard and can look forward to new and exciting units during fourth quarter.
