Winter Park Band Notes
April 29, 2018
FROM MR. BLACKMER
Thank you to all of our parent volunteers who came out this past Thursday night to help with Band Banquet preparations! Your contributions are invaluable to a smooth-running banquet on May 11!
Also, a huge thanks to everyone who helped with Marching Band uniform washing over the past week!
We can still use some more parent volunteers for Band Registration night this coming Tuesday! If you can assist, sign-up HERE!
Finally, this Thursday is our final concert of the school year! The students have been working very hard to present a terrific program, and I hope to see all of our parents there!
All the Best!
Mr. Blackmer
BAND REGISTRATION VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
We are still in need of parent and student volunteers for Band Registration Night on May 1. To volunteer, go HERE.
BAND REGISTRATION NIGHT - MAY 1
Band Registration Night for the 2018/2019 school year is on Tuesday, May 1, from 6 PM - 9 PM in the High School Band Room! Registration forms and information will be available on the Band website later this week. Also, just for clarification - Band Registration is for everyone! This is not "marching band registration." This is also different from "course selections" made back in January/February through guidance counselors!
The schedule for Band Registration night is as follows:
- Incoming Freshman, 6:00 PM - 6:45 PM
- Rising Sophomore, 6:45 PM - 7:30 PM
- Rising Junior, 7:30 PM - 8:15 PM
- Rising Senior, 8:15 PM - 9:00 PM
It is OK if you cannot make your scheduled time slot!
If you know of a rising band freshman who will be at Winter Park High School next year, please pass along this information to their parents!
BAND BANQUET
The Band Banquet is on Friday, May 11, beginning at 6 PM in the West Cafeteria for a potluck dinner. We hope to see all our families in attendance! You must RSVP and sign up for a dish by Friday, May 4 to attend the banquet portion of the evening. To do this, go to www.winterparkhsband.com, choose the Band calendar link, and click on the RSVP and Helping Hand icons on May 11. An invitation with more information was sent by email this past week. Email mdufresne5@embarqmail.com with questions.
CARPENTRY & PAINTING VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
Skilled Carpenter Needed
If you have carpentry skills and tools we need your help. We are making some modifications to our marching band trailer to accommodate the new aluminum stairs that will be delivered this spring.
Painters Needed
Due to a lack of enough volunteers, the Trailer painting day has been moved to May 19. Please look for an opportunity on Band Registration Night to sign up to help with this important need.
For both opportunities to serve, please contact Willson McBurney at WillsonMcBurney@gmail.com.
MAITLAND SHORES 4TH OF JULY BAND
Do you want to learn classic patriotic pieces and show tunes and keep up your chops during the summer at the same time? Then you will want to play in the 46th annual Maitland Shores 4th of July Fun Band. We perform at noon on the 4th of July on Lake Maitland then receive a free catered BBQ lunch for each member plus one guest. (Meal tickets for additional guests are for sale at the event.) Band members range in age from High School to much older, and many return year after year! It is a great way to give back to the community, keep in touch with friends, and eat a great meal. High school students can earn community service hours!
Our 3 rehearsals will be held in the office building at Maitland Community Park, 1400 Mayo Ave., off 17-92 near the overpass of Maitland Blvd, on Sundays, June 10, June 24, and July 1. They will start at 1:30 PM. There will be no rehearsal on Father’s Day, June 1!
Please contact Jane Claus if you are interested and/or if you have a friend that is interested. (Ask Jane first before inviting a friend, in case we are full in that section.) There is a limit to the number we can have in the band, so slots will be filled on a first come first serve basis to make sure all parts are covered. The music is challenging (Sousa, Fillmore, etc.), so we welcome those who can read well and have played at least 2 years in school.
AMAZON FUNDRAISING OPPORTUNITY!
Even though the holiday season is past us, this is still an excellent tool to raise money for the Band every time you shop at Amazon. The Winter Park High School Alumni Band Association is a registered charity on Smile.Amazon.com, so please remember to use this unique link to shop at Amazon every time, and a small percentage of the sale (at no cost to you) will automatically be sent quarterly to the WPHSABAA account and then donated to the Winter Park Band Program. If we all use this link every time, we can raise funds on an ongoing basis to help the band! https://smile.amazon.com/ch/27-0964817
If you have any questions, contact Jane Claus at janeclaus@live.com.
