Thornhill Elementary PFC Newsletter
Volume 26, Issue 6, September 11, 2018
From the PFC President
Hello Everyone,
We are mid-way through September, which is a month of many changes. Football season has started. Fall is almost officially here. And even though this is the fourth year I, and my family, have done the school thing here at Thornhill, I still can't get over how strange it is to already be a month into the school year.
But, as we are in September, that means things are really kicking into gear here at Thornhill. The PFC will be meeting on the 17th to approve the budget for the year, and a good part of that funding comes from the donations all of you contribute now, and throughout the school year.
I'm sure you have seen the Back To School Donation Drive bright yellow envelopes your kids have brought home (that is, if you have dared to dig around in your kid's backpack.). Thornhill needs your help, in any way you can provide, to fund many of the staff positions, and programs, that make this school run the way it should. Know that all of your support matters.
And speaking of support...I want to thank Rudy Gonzalez, who has stepped up to be the new Dads Club president. I'm sure the next Movie Night will be a good one.
Mahalo,
Rex Crum

Tree Removal at St. John’s Church This Week
A reminder from our neighbor St. John’s Church, which kindly lets Thornhill families use their parking lot for drop off and pick up:
Some tree removal is scheduled to begin this Thursday and Friday, September 13 and 14. The equipment will be staged in the church parking lot and the work will occur during the normal business hours between 8am and 4pm. We will do our best to keep the noise to a minimum and regret any inconvenience this may cause any of you and the school. Some of the parking lot will be blocked off to accommodate the equipment which, we hope, will have a minimal effect on the school traffic as the parents drop off their children. Any comments or questions, please direct them to Jerry Moran, 510-531-0980 (home) 510-502-9695 (cell).

All That Jazz!
Jazz is a wonderful musical art that helps kids learn rhythm, theory, and improvisation. The Tuesday morning jazz enrichment class currently has two students, and needs a minimum of five students or it will be canceled for the fall. It’s open to 4th and 5th graders and requires some experience with an instrument. Sign up today!

Back to School Donation Drive Update!
Thank you so much to those families who have already contributed to the Back to School Donation Drive! Your support helps provide teachers’ aides, a PE coach, a librarian and books, music and art instruction, computers, classroom supplies and so much more. This year, the PFC (the Parent Faculty Club) spends about $1,000 per student, and the Back to School Donation Drive is one of the biggest ways that we do that.
Participation has been great, and we’ve received over $40,000 of our $190,00 goal already! Our goal is 100% participation, with each family contributing what they can. By working together, we can achieve our fundraising goals, and give our kids the best Thornhill experience possible.
Remember, you can donate by check (send it in via the bright yellow envelope in your child’s homework folder or download a form from the website) or online. (Checks preferred so we don’t have to lose money on PayPal fees!) We also happily accept installments in amounts and frequency that works for you. More details are available on the website.
Thank you,
Adrienne Selke & Rianna Stoll
BSDD Co-Chairs
