GT with Mrs. G
Week of August 21
Greetings from Mrs. G!
Happenings at SSS this week:
1st Grade PTP- Mrs. G brought some new games for us to play as we continue to get to know each other. We'll also continue our book, The Dinosaur Mystery (Boxcar Children).
2nd Grade PTP- We will continue reading Stuart Little and try some new math tricks.
3rd Grade PTP- We will finish our letters to our penpals. I have found a few classrooms of 3rd graders in different places (currently, my hometown of West Liberty in Eastern KY, a school in Arizona, and a school in Texas, but more are coming!) that would like to correspond with us. We learned how to write friendly letters last week and this week we will finish those and prepare them to mail. We will begin studying about the places these students live and do some math with the information we uncover. We'll also continue reading Third Grade Angels.
4th-6th Grade Code Breakers We are closing in on the mystery of who stole A Lady Writing painting in our book. Students are being assessed on reading skills like summarizing and compare and contrast, as well on their ability to speak and listen in classroom discussions. Thanks to Susan Coblin, we have a new set of pentominoes and are learning new ways to see shapes and make patterns.
4th-6th Genius Hour Last week, we practiced the inquiry process, note taking, and summarizing with an article about the human brain. This week, students will find 3 sources on the internet, make a bibliography, and begin collecting information to help them answer their questions. Please encourage them to work on these projects at home. 90 minutes a week just isn't enough!
7th-8th Innovation Explorations- We are almost finished with our book Anthem. We've also begun our Shark Tank projects. Students are partnering up to do develop a product idea that would be marketable to their peers. They will conduct market research this week and begin developing their "pitch." They will also need to develop a business logo and consider pricing. They are really impressing me with their ideas!
7th-8th KYA Mock Legislature- This week, we will draft a bill. We have had some impressive and mature conversations about the needs of the people of Kentucky. We have researched the impact of the opioid addiction crisis, discussed the need for improved health education, and examined the economic and environmental impacts of coal. What a bright, compassionate bunch of kids you have loaned me! We are gearing up for the KYA conference (November 5-7) and students need to be sure they've submitted financial aid forms or are making plans to pay the fees. We will begin a coffee fundraiser this week to help offset the costs. If you would like to order, see any KYA student or go online and order here!
