CATCHING THEM IN THE ACT
A CONSERVATORY PREP NEWSLETTER
WEEK ENDING 9/9/2016
If you haven't already signed up, there are still a few spaces open in our group for the trip to the Dominican Republic. Students will receive 1/2 credit in Service Learning. I did find out that another small high school will also be on the ship and they can't wait to meet us.
Key Club, National Honor Society and Student Government are all starting up. I am thrilled with the energy and eagerness of our students to plan events and work with groups outside of Conservatory Prep.
ACT test prep is offered on Mondays and Wednesdays during lunch. Although not mandatory, we strongly suggest for juniors and seniors to participate.
All of our classes now have google classroom where assignments are posted. Parents have been sent invites to join the class to be able to view assignments and your child's progress. If you have not received and invite or not able to view, please send us an email so we can fix the situation. I am sure we still have a few bugs to work out.
Using the 3D software takes training and practice. We are bringing in Mr. Mike Russo, an expert with using 3D software to train the students and faculty this coming Tuesday and Thursday mornings.
For some students, they find our program too challenging and for others, not challenging enough. For those students who want to further push themselves, we offer the Advanced Topic (AT) option in all core academic classes. The AT is original research in addition to the requirements of the class.

In English Section I, the students are acting out the snappy dialogues they've written as part of a combined grammar and style lesson. Before writing their dialogues, they learned proper punctuation and Elmore Leonard's rules for writing. In this unit the students are reading literature which incorporates forensics, and they are studying the art of writing scripts and creating sound effects for authentic detective radio shows.
Lindsay, Faryn, and Jenna are listening to Slaughterhouse-Five on tape. The novel challenges us to imagine that moments in our life might exist frozen in another dimension, and that in that dimension we could revisit those moments again and again, at will. The students wrote an essay answering the question How would viewing death as just a point in a loop, affect our worldview?
American history students have delved into research learning to collect information using oral history. Students recorded and transcribed relatives and close friends who immigrated to America. Vienna shares an old family recipe for a fluff apple cake with the class.
The game of chess is a great game to develop math problem-solving skills.
Ryan explains the positive and negative effects of sugar on our bodies.
Algebra I: Students are working on one and two-step equations and graphing.
The forensics class is going through the process of collecting data from a crime scene.
Students in probability and statistics were becoming familiar with complex probability terms.
Students in Music Theory class are learning how to read music and sing as an ensemble.
In American Government, the students are completing their group stamp series illustrating the structure of their governments, the powers of their governments, and the rights of the citizens. They will present the project next week.
Student Government Association had its first meeting of the year with a pizza lunch. Elections will be held in 2 weeks!
Computer Science: Students are working on coding with Code.org and the Lego WeDo project.
A still life optical line drawing of a boot and the purpose is to learn how to do source work-drawing from life. Learning how to draw what we see not what we think we see.
In Latin I the students have already read full paragraphs in the language. They chose a Republican portrait to surround with a passage from their text.
