SICKNESS, RATS AND MORE
We have had quite a few children (and some staff) away ill this week and the reasons are many - covid, flu, cold, tonsillitis for example. Our wish is for everyone to be well and at school, but our appreciation goes to you for really helping your children to get well more quickly and to minimise the spread of sickness at school, by keeping sick children home. This means a great deal to our community. Thank you very much indeed for being so mindful.
A reminder that nasal rat tests are available in front of the office and from Pre-Kindy, Kindy and Pre-primary classes. In accordance with government and CEWA policy, only adults are permitted to collect and sign for them.
MAKING JESUS REAL
Our MJR award winner for Week 5 is Leo M from Year 1. He is recognised for displaying the MJR values at Holy Rosary on a daily basis. He displayed kindness and compassion to those around him. Congratulations!!

SCIENCE
Science Week 2022
This week was National Science Week with the theme being "Glass - more than meets the eye" We embraced the theme at Holy Rosary and what a lot we learned!
The Junior children learned how stained glass windows are made and then they got to make their own with dough and a 'glass' mix of crushed lollies. The lollies changed from solid to liquid and back to solid again - just like how the sand changes when it is made into glass. They also investigated the sounds that different sized glass jars make, the sounds produced when different amounts of water are in glass jars and what happens to objects when placed in water - refraction.
The older children learned how glass is made from sand and kept flat by being spread on a layer of molten tin. The children all made a kaleidoscope which is usually made from mirrors made of glass. We had a safer version and they were made from acrylic mirrors. The children had great fun investigating with their kaleidoscopes and pictures taken on their ipads were amazing!
The Music room was used as a Science Lab during lunchtimes and a variety of objects were out to investigate. There was a microscope and glass slides, a periscope, magnifying glasses and interesting objects of Ms Skinners. There were unusual mirrors, torches, prisms and glass marbles to roll down the slides or on the marble run. A special favourite were our school made lava lamps with oil, vinegar and food colouring and at the bottom of the oil bicarbonate of soda was placed. We also managed a mini volcano as obsidian is glass made from lava.
Please remember there is still lots to do all over Perth this week and we have our Science Show in Week 8.

LIBRARY
The Holy Rosary community is invited to share in the joy of Book Week next Friday 26th August from 8.50 am for our Book Week Parade. Celebrating Australian books and our love of literature, we will parade costumes of our favourite book characters, congratulate our student artists and enjoy a wonderful end to an exciting week. The theme this year is DREAMING WITH EYES OPEN and after the Parade, the library will be open until 10.30 for parents to view the Book Week art as well as our beautiful library space. We hope you will join us. Thank you for your support of reading at HR.
