School Attendances/Absences
In the last ACORN, I wrote about Oakview’s attendance data over recent years and the downward trend we are showing with regard to daily average attendance. Beginning in this edition, Oakview’s average daily attendance will be posted for the last two week period. Our goal is to keep school wide attendance at 97% or higher for the year! So far, so good. Keep up the great work in getting your children to school each day.

We often times receive questions about state attendance regulations. These can be found in the Parent/Student Handbook on our web site. Below are some of the most frequently asked questions and answers:
Q: When do I send in parent notes for my child’s absences?
A: All notes regarding absences should be submitted to the front office within 2 days of your child arriving back at school. An absence will remain unexcused until the note is received. It is imperative that if your child is ill that school excuses are turned in ASAP so that a truancy referral does not automatically generate within Greenville County Schools.
Q: Can my doctor’s office submit a note to the school?
A: Doctors can fax notes directly to the school office at 355-7115
Q: Can I take a family trip and get that absence excused?
A: Family travel and vacations are never an excused absence. Parents should schedule all trips around the 180 day school year as outlined in the school calendar.
Q: Can my child get make up work for unexcused absences?
A: Teachers are not obligated to provide make up work in advance of a family trip or other unexcused absence. Make-up work will be provided upon the student’s return to school. In addition, not all lessons and hands on activities can be made up with a worksheet or by written assignment. When students miss school, they miss a great deal of content and instruction that cannot be recreated afterward.
Q: Can my child be considered “truant” from school?
A: Yes. According to S.C. school attendance regulations, after 3 consecutive unexcused absences or 5 total unexcused absences a student is considered truant. An automated call will go out from Greenville County Schools alerting the parent of truancy. At this point a discipline referral is generated. (NOTE: If you are considering sending your child to a magnet academy in Greenville County Schools, discipline referrals of this type could cause your child's application to be denied)
Q: Does arriving tardy to school impact attendance?
A: Yes. A total of 6 tardies will negate perfect attendance for the school year.
