Estelline HS Computer Science
Computer Science Rocks!
Different Times Call for Different Methods in Learning!
Students in 7th hour ECS classes have moved from using scratch in the classroom to CodeHS as the main platform, where they are learning about VR environments and how to create personal VR environments!
Students in 8th hour CSPAP classes have also moved to the CodeHS classroom versus the Code.org classroom. CodeHS is a more intuitive platform that allows for reinforcement of learning concepts and more in-depth participation from the learners end-as to help combat loss of face-to-face lectures.
Students in the 6th hour Entrepreneurship class are working through entrepreneurship packets that help explain and understand entrepreneurship topics through the VentureLab curriculum.
All students and parents were asked to snap pictures of them working on their homework and lessons!

Entrepreneurship students working hard on projects!
One of the projects students are working on consist of creating and "branding" a local cleaning company out of White, SD called Kick Off Your Shoes Cleaning Company LLC. Students have to come with a new graphic for the company that will go on business cards, t-shirts, and coffee mugs. Students will then pitch their graphic and idea to the owner Shara Thompson. A prize of a $25 gift card will be awarded to the group of students that win the contest!
The other project students are diligently working on is creating sports pictures/buttons for girls and boys basketball. Memory mates, buttons, wallets, and picture frames are all in the mix for students. Such a great experience and fun to watch students learn and grow to experience!

NCWIT Awards were a Success
All three girls were honored with an award that distinguishes them for their skills and expertise in different computer science and technology fields. Jordan Saathoff received the Rising Star award, which honors women that are just starting their career in CS or IT. Morgan Saathoff and Gillian Morris both received the Affiliate Region Winner Award for the ND/SD Regions.
The ceremony was held in DSU's new building: Beacom Center for Technology on campus. The keynote speaker was Cynthia Hetherington from New Jersey. Cynthia specializes in security matters in all aspects of life. She spoke to the students that were honored about "Just Trying" and some other things to remember along the way.
Both Gillian Morris and Morgan Saathoff plan on attending DSU for a CS related field-way to go all girls!

'Tis the Season for Extra Credit!
This is the season of giving and I am “giving” you an opportunity to get some extra-credit points for in class. Any student who brings me a new stocking cap, pair of gloves, or a package of socks will receive 5 extra-credit points. I will apply 5 points to your homework grade.
The items you give to me will then be turned over to Mrs. Hanenberger, and she will distribute them to students in need.
Please turn in items by Monday, December 3 if you want extra credit.
For every five items donated I will donate one additional item.
Thank you Mr. Benning for giving me this great idea-I love it! Mr. Benning is also doing this in his HS Math Classes--great way to spread cheer and helping others!!
