SOCIAL AWARENESS

This January, we move into Social Awareness and we are kicking it off with class agreements and BUCKET-FILLING!!! Social Awareness is a focus on perspective taking, empathy, appreciating diversity and respect for others.

2020 CLASSROOM AGREEMENTS

Several classes kicked off the new year with classroom agreements created with the intention to build community and be responsible citizens in our classroom communities.

1. How do we want to feel in this class?

2. In order to feel this way, we will.....

3. We will solve conflict by.......

SELF AWARENESS & SELF-MANAGEMENT

The MOOD METER

The Mood Meter teaches students emotional vocabulary and by doing so it also emphasizes the value of acknowledging and accepting the full range of emotions.

"Attaching the correct label to the emotion is critical because once we've labeled a feeling, we've also begun figuring out what to do about it." (Permission To Feel)

"NAME IT TO TAME IT" & "FEEL IT TO HEAL IT"

.....These are just two strategies students have been learning in TRAC classes on how to handle strong emotions and feelings. See the 6 core human emotions (pictured below) drawn by own very own talented ME artist: Lucy Stratton, Grade 5

"Labeling emotions accurately increases self awareness and helps communicate emotions effectively, reducing misunderstandings in social interactions." (Permission To feel)

Upper grades discussed situations that might cause them to feel strong emotions such as overwhelm, stress, fear and worry and brainstormed strategies they could use to cope

PERMISSION TO FEEL

Students in primary created feeling books to show what they have learned about self awareness, the brain and body connection and how feelings influence our behavior and actions.

LETS TALK

When we can talk about our feelings they become less overwhelming, and less scary.

The people we trust with that important talk can help us know we are not alone

"JUST BREATHE" IS OUR MOTTO FOR 2020!!

Mindful breathing helps us to calm the body and mind so we can be fully present and less reactive or overwhelmed by what's happening around us.

LET'S GET REGULATED!!

Students had the opportunity to make scent bags using essential oils to regulate their energy levels. Self-regulation is being able to change our state, control our energy and calm down our bodies through our breath and our awareness. Making scent bags gave students the opportunity to see where their energy was at and ask themselves:

Do I need to calm down or do I need to energize?

APPRECIATIONS & APOLOGIES CIRCLES

Students have the opportunity to practice giving and receiving compliments and apologies throughout the year as part of our class community building circle time

GROWTH MINDSET

Upper grades studied famous failures and learned about growth mindsets and how failure is a very important part of life.

“If parents want to give their children a gift, the best thing they can do is to teach their children to love challenges, be intrigued by mistakes, enjoy effort, and keep on learning. That way, their children don’t have to be slaves of praise. They will have a lifelong way to build and repair their own confidence.”

-Carol S. Dweck

FAMILY TRAC NIGHT WAS AWESOME!!!

Thanks to the 100+ families who attended TRAC Family night in December! We watched the movie Inside Out, the perfect Pixar flick to wrap up our two month unit on self awareness and self-management (our emotions, feelings and how our actions and behaviors are influenced by them). If you haven't seen the movie, Inside Out is about our emotions (as characters) in a way that only Pixar can make magical!!

T.R.A.C. IN A SNAP: WHAT IS TRAC???

EUSD TRAC Program

WHAT IS T.R.A.C.?

The purpose of the TRAC program is to provide universal social emotional instruction to the entire school population. Students will gain skills to boost their self awareness, increase self esteem and self regulation, improve their social skills, encourage empathy, and learn to seek internal motivation for their personal and academic success.

The goal is to create positive relationships and an atmosphere where each student feels connected, cared about, and physically and emotionally safe.

"It is not our job to toughen children up to face a cruel and heartless world. It's our job to raise children who will make the world a little less cruel and heartless." ~L.R. Knost
