Kindness Week

Staff Spotlight: Gretchen Seeger

Mrs. Gretchen Seeger is an Intervention Specialist at Otsego Elementary. She currently works with students in kindergarten and second grade but she has taught every grade from K through 6 at some point! She also taught at North Baltimore for 3 years before coming to Otsego. Mrs. Seeger is originally from Mansfield, Ohio. She came to Bowling Green State University where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Special Education and Elementary Education. She also completed the Reading Endorsement program at BGSU. She and her husband have a son named Spencer and one cat named Samara. Her favorite thing to teach is reading because she loves to read and she enjoys sharing her love of books with her students

Preschool Registration for 2018-2019 opens on Tuesday at 8am!

We will begin accepting registration paperwork for NEW preschoolers on Tuesday, February 20th at 8:00am. Paperwork will be online to print out or available for pick up in the Elementary office beginning Feb. 20th. We will NOT be accepting or distributing paperwork prior to Feb. 20th. Classes are on a first come, first serve basis, so be sure to register early as classes fill up quickly.

*Please note: you will need your $200 deposit as well as the $35 supply fee with you when you register. Checks will be held until after May 1st. If you qualify for free tuition with the required paperwork or are placed on the waiting list, your deposit/check will be returned.

*Students must turn 3 on or before August 1st, 2018, and be completely potty trained (unless on an IEP), to attend preschool. Also, 3 year olds may ONLY attend 2 or 3 days per week and are not eligible to attend more days.

Blizzard Bags

As of right now, we have used all 5 calamity days that the state of Ohio gives us. So, for the next three calamity days we will be using our Blizzard Bags. It has been a few years since we have used these, so I wanted to send out some reminders about how they work:

1. We can use these for the 6th, 7th and 8th day that school is cancelled.

2. The assignments will be posted on the Otsego Website (www.otsegoknights.org) under the Elementary Tab, and then under the parent tab (Teachers can also provide students with hard copies once we return to school if needed.)

3. Students will have 2 weeks to complete the assignments.

4. Depending on the color of the day, your child will have specials area classes to complete Blizzard Bags for as well (i.e. Art, Music, P.E.)

Please contact your child's teacher if any assistance is needed with the Blizzard Bags for completion.

Thank you so much for your cooperation!

Kindergarten Round-Up and 2018-2019 Registration

On Wednesday, March 7, 2018 at 6:30pm, Otsego Elementary School will be holding a Kindergarten Round Up Meeting. This meeting is for all parents of incoming kindergarten students for the 2018-2019 school year. Students must by 5 years of age on or before August 1, 2018 to enter kindergarten.

Kindergarten Round Up will include basic information about kindergarten, explanation and distribution of registration forms, and an opportunity to sign-up for your child's Kindergarten Screening time slot in June of 2018.

Feel free to bring proof of residency, certified original birth certificate, photo ID of parent/guardian, immunization record, and complete court file-stamped custody papers (if applicable) to the meeting and we can make copies and add them to your student's file following the meeting. If you are unable to bring them at this time, please plan to have them at your screening appointment in June.

If you are unable to attend this meeting, but have a student entering kindergarten for the 2018-2019 school year, please stop by the Otsego Elementary Office anytime starting March 8, 2018 to pick up a registration packet, or you can download and print the forms from our school website (otsegoknights.org) under the Parent tab on the Elementary Page. (These forms will not be accessible until March 8, 2018).

If you have any questions regarding Kindergarten Round Up, registration and/or screening please call the Otsego Elementary Office at 419-823-4381 Option 4.

Celebrating the 100th Day of School in Kindergarten

Baseball Youth Clinics

Beginning January 7th; Otsego High School baseball will be conducting youth clinics during open gym time in the Jr. High School gym, from 12:30-2:00 on Sundays through February 18. Otsego students K-8 are welcome to attend the clinics which will include instruction from Otsego coaching staff and current players. Please contact Coach Welker with any questions (cwelker@otsegoknights.org).

Phone Number Changes

If your phone number has changed and needs to be updated in our system PLEASE call the office with that information. There have been many recent issues where we do not have the right number or it has been disconnected when trying to contact a students parent or guardian. It is crucial that we have a working number in the event of an emergency.

Thank you

A Note from the School Nurse:

This year we have the following over the counter medications listed on the enclosed document stocked in each office. Please fill out the form and return to school with your child. We are hoping to cut back on parents needing to bring medication in and/or prevent sending students home. Hopefully this makes it easier on parents, teachers and staff.

Several students have been bringing cough drops with them to school without a note. Students may not take these without written permission from a parent/guardian. We have this listed on the form as well.

As always if you have any questions please feel free to call me at 419-823-4381 ext. 4002.

Thank you,

Jane Gray RN, BSN

This week we participated in Random Acts of Kindness (RAK) week throughout the school. We challenged the students to engage in random acts of kindness each day, without looking for acknowledgment or anything in return. While I expected our students to be successful, I am truly blown away by the kindness they displayed towards others. I hope this continues long past RAK week. Although I told the students to engage in these acts selflessly, I feel compelled to share some of the what they accomplished.

First, I saw multiple students in the older grades read to the younger classes. We also had multiple classes create cards and posters thanking people who have made an impact in their lives. Additionally, we had more than 90 people throughout the building be highlighted for their acts of services towards others. Finally, all the students worked together to created more than 900 Valentines, with the help of Mrs. Helle and Ms. Rehbein, that were given to children at Mercy Children's Hospital and the Ronald McDonald House in Toledo. We were also able to give additional Valentines to three area nursing homes! I can not put into words the joy I saw on these individuals' faces as I delivered multiple cards to them. It was heartwarming. So congratulations Knights, you definitely brought extra kindness to this building and community. Let's keep cultivating kindness, and impact the world for the better.

We have several things to look forward to as we approach March. First, we will be kicking off our annual Pennies for Patients to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society on March 1st. This fundraiser will run the duration of March, until we leave for Spring Break on March 29th. Please be on the lookout for fliers and additional information coming home. This year, we also have the additional option of raising money through personal or classroom webpages. We will also be starting our Spring Groups in March. If you are interested in having your student participate in a small group with myself and/or the interning counselors, please contact me via email. Again, be on the lookout for more group information to come.

Finally, we are starting our Career Cafes this spring. If you are a parent that owns a restaurant or bakery, or is a lawyer, please contact Miss Syrowski if you would like to come in and speak with our third through fifth grade students. Thank you all for your help and dedication to our students. Have a great weekend. Also, don't forget to check out the counseling website at: http://oesknightscounselor.weebly.com/

Warmest Regards,

Miss Syrowski

Please help our students by collecting tabs from aluminum cans. Each tab is easy to remove and can be donated to the Ronald McDonald House. The tabs help fund various projects for Ronald McDonald Houses and its visitors. Send the tabs in a bag to the school and our students will do the rest!

You can help the school earn money for supplies by collecting Box Tops. Our PTO collects and counts them and puts the money straight back into the school. (We earn 10 cents per Box Top). If you are able to collect a lot of these, it would be great if you could turn them in in groups of 50, but we will take them even if they are not grouped together.
