Back to School / Meet the Teacher Nights

This year, we are holding two different nights in order to accommodate our large numbers.

Wednesday, August 21, 4-6pm - 1st & 2nd Grade students

Thursday, August 22, 4-6pm - Preschool & Kindergarten students

This is a great opportunity to not only meet the teacher, but to drop off school supplies, find their locker, sign up for conference times, take a quick tour of the school, turn in any medication and forms to Nurse Dori, and to pick up your bus pass if needed.

Picture Opportunity!

This year, our Transportation Department will have a school bus parked out front at Morris Elementary if you would like to stage your first day of school picture.

Bus passes will be available in your student's classroom on their Back to School night - all students riding the bus must have their pass with them when boarding. There is a $5 charge for a replacement bus pass. If you have any questions about bus routes, or any concerns throughout the year, please email

Nurse Dori

Will be available during both Back to School / Meet the Teacher nights. Please stop by her office with any medications your child will need to have here at school, any allergy action plans, dietary restrictions notes, or to ask any questions you might have. If you have any questions before (or after) please email her at

A few reminders from the Nutrition Department

Reminder: You can apply for Free/Reduced Price Meals anytime during the school year, even if you have been turned down before & your circumstances have changed. You can find the 2018-2019 Iowa Application for Free & Reduced Price School Meals on the school website under Departments and Food Services. You can also pick up a hard copy in any building office or contact Karen Miller at and request to have one mailed to you.

Also look for last minute menu changes on the school website under the menus tab.

Lunch Times

Be sure to check with your child's teacher for their exact lunch time. Each grade has two overlapping shifts. While the rest of the schedule adjusts slightly on our Monday early out schedule, the lunch schedule remains the same.

2nd: 10:55-11:20 & 11:10-11:35

1st: 11:30-12 & 11:45-12:15

Kindergarten: 12:10-12:35 & 12:25-12:50

Parent / Teacher Conferences

The first set of conferences is scheduled for Monday, October 14 & Thursday, October 17 from 3-7pm both nights. We will have a 2pm dismissal both of those days. Be sure to sign up for a time on your teachers posters out in the main hall when you are here for Back to School / Meet the Teacher Night. (Please note - Preschool teachers will have their sign up sheets in their classrooms.) Our Spring Conferences will be held on Monday, February 24 & Thursday, February 27. The timing of those conferences will be decided after Fall conferences have been completed.

What Day is It?

The first day of school is considered Day 1, the next Day 2, etc. until we get to 8, then the next day is Day 1 and we start all over again. Knowing what Day it is in the Rotation Schedule will help you know what your student has planned for specials that day (PE, Music, Art, Library, or Guidance) Your student's teacher will let you know what their schedule looks like so you can plan ahead.

Please remember to save Box Tops for Morris Elementary! Our students love to see all of the awesome new books when the Box Top money comes in! Your students can turn box tops in at the office, or to their classroom teacher.

Recycle Those Markers & Crayons!

Once again this year, we will be collecting used/exhausted markers to send in for recycling at the end of the year. Our first year, we kept 26 pounds of markers out of the landfill, and last year, we sent in 35.4 pounds! Collection boxes will be in the front office. As a reminder, we also collect used crayons for the Crayon Initiative (we recycled almost 100 pounds of crayons at the end of May!), box tops, and pop can tabs. All of these can be turned in at the front office.

Traffic Patterns

The district office is hoping to get the traffic map out later today - please be sure to let your teacher know which lot you will be utilizing during pick up and drop off and pick up your assigned lot sign during Meet the Teacher too.

Items left from last year

We have a few students who were absent on the last day of the school year last May. If you did not pick up your materials over the summer, your student's items will be in their new room for you to pick up on your Back to School / Meet the Teacher night.

A few notes from Ms. Jen

Less than a week left til the start of the 2019-2020 school year! We are excited to welcome all of our new friends in preschool and kindergarten and welcome back all of our first and second grade Morris Jays as well.

Be sure to read through information that comes out - we try not to send it if it's not important. I appreciate you taking the time to read through the updates!

With our student numbers now being over 725, we need everyone to be on the same page for everything to run smoothly on a daily basis.

Please take a moment to review the drop off and pick up plan if that applies to you, and speak with your child about their after school plans several times before the first day. Consistency is key - the more they know what to expect, the better they will be at following through.

We look forward to meeting everyone at our Back To School / Meet the Teacher Nights and we will see all of our K-2 Morris Jays on Monday, August 26. (Please note it is a 2pm dismissal on our first day - and every Monday after that.) Preschool students will join us on Tuesday, September 4.

Let's make it an awesome year! - jen
