Student Wellbeing: Mindfulness

What is mindfulness?

According to the foundation for a Mindful Society, mindfulness is the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we’re doing, and not becoming overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us.

Mindfulness is the process of accepting your thoughts and managing your emotions. When children practice mindfulness they can concentrate on what is immediately happening to them or around them in the present moment.

Research shows mindfulness skills benefit children's developing brains and improves their emotions and behavior. It helps children build self-esteem, control stress, face challenging situations, and develop coping skills.

The goal of mindfulness is to awaken the inner workings of mental, emotional, and physical processes. This is accomplished through meditation.

What is Meditation?

Meditation is the process of exploring. According to Giovanni Dienstmann (2020), an international author and meditation teacher, Meditation is a mental exercise that involves relaxation, focus, and awareness. It is paying attention to what is happening in the present moment and helps us develop the skills we need to become more mindful of our surroundings and become more in tune with our bodies, mind, and emotions.

Benefits of practicing mindfulness

There are multiple benefits resulting from the practice of mindful meditation (Wedge,2018). They include:

1. It develops the habit of focusing on the present moment and ignoring distractions.

2. It teaches them to stay calm in the face of life’s stressful times.

3. It creates good habits for the future. When faced with life’s challenges, they know they can find peace by taking a few moments to meditate.

4. It promotes happiness by lowering social anxiety and stress.

5. It promotes patience.

6. It can improve functions in the brain like cognitive control, working memory, cognitive flexibility, and better grades.

7. It can improve attentiveness and impulse control.

Library Book of the Month

Long Story Shortz - My Gratitude Jar - Written and Narrated by Kristin Wiens

My Gratitude Jar

by Kristin Wiens

The book tells the story of a young boy, Jacob who learns the value of a daily #gratitude practice. His teacher gives the class all a gratitude jar to decorate and encourages the students to write down gratitude’s each day. On a particularly bad day, Jacob discovers the value of pausing and taking a few deep breathes and the value of having a gratitude jar.

This book introduces students to concepts of mindfulness. Jacob learns to bring his awareness to the present moment both on good days when he feels there is something to be grateful about and on grumpy days when stopping to breathe can help bring some perspective to a bad day. Ms. Lane also encourages the students to be non-judgmental in how they practice gratitude: “There is no right or wrong way to be grateful.”

Rock Chapel School News!

Meet the Rock Chapel 2020-21 Teacher of the Year Ms. Alexis Cofer!

It is an honor to be Rock Chapel’s 2020-21 Teacher of the Year! What I love most about teaching is seeing how students blossom from the beginning of the year to the end. The progress they make is amazing. I was once that shy student in the classroom, so I know the importance of making students feel welcome and creating a comfortable environment that promotes learning and engagement. I will continue to do my part in helping students have a successful school year. I appreciate all who nominated me, thank you!
