Meet Your Teacher Night - 2017
5G - Ham, Hildebrand, & Hinks - with Ms. Beam
Reading Log
Students are expected to read for 100 minutes each week. They can read anything they want and use Read Theory as part of that reading. Reading logs will be checked Tuesday for the previous week. Students are to record information as we have discussed in class.
Vocabulary
I will not have a weekly vocabulary list. Instead, we will build our vocabulary through our Read Aloud, Independent Reading, Shared Reading, and a vocabulary word of the week. I feel that students have plenty of vocabulary to learn in Science, Math, and Social Studies. Also, I feel that as far as reading is concerned, students are better equipped if we focus on figuring out what a word means when it is surrounded in authentic text.
My plan is to build a vocabulary list over a couple of weeks. Then, I will create a list for them to study, a quizlet, a kahoot, and then have a paper/pencil quiz.
What I would really want is for students to use these vocabulary words in his/her writing. I feel this is a better way to incorporate vocabulary in a class where we are focusing on Reading and Language Arts together.

Spelling
Yes, we will have spelling. I hope to make this last year of studying spelling as painless as possible. Here is my plan:
- Your child should already have all the possible spelling word list as we taped them into the language arts ISN
- Once a week, we will go over the spelling pattern and have time in class to work on independent practice. I plan to have this work for them each Tuesday.
- The next day (Wednesday), students will have a quiz.
I cannot guarantee that they will have spelling each week.
40 book challenge
Along with our Independent Reading and the student's 100 minutes of reading, students are encouraged to set a goal of reading 40 books. Students should write the books they have completed in 5th grade. They may use books that we read in class. We will start this list within the next week.
Geography
This will be given to students on Friday afternoon to give them the opportunity to work on it over the weekend. It will be checked in class the following Thursday.
