The Lumberjack Edge
Cedar Mill Elementary School
February 16, 2018
Dear Cedar Mill Community,
Words cannot express the heartache felt in light of this week's tragic event at Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. No student, parent, staff member, or community should ever have to face such a tragedy. School is a place where all students should feel safe, valued, and respected. Parents should also have a peace of mind in knowing their child(ren) are taken care of at all times. I think I speak for our entire community in expressing the deepest sympathies to those impacted by this horrific event.
Please know that safety is our number one priority for us at Cedar Mill and in the Beaverton School District. We continue our partner with our parents on this front as well. If you see or hear something that doesn't settle well with you in regard to safety and security measures, we want to hear from you. As a staff, we are also taking this tragedy as a reminder to continually monitor and adjust our security and safety needs at Cedar Mill.
Do not ever hesitate to reach out to me with questions or concerns, including more information on district protocols in place. For those of you who may not have received Superintendent Grotting's message, I am including it below as well.
Sincerely,
Amy Chamberlain
Principal
Dear Beaverton Community,
We at the Beaverton School District would like to express our deepest condolences to staff, students, families and community of Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. It is a sad day. All students and staff in our nation’s schools deserve to feel safe while learning and teaching.
In light of this tragedy, we know many parents and community members might want additional information about how the Beaverton School District is ensuring the safety and security of our students and staff.
We have a very strong partnership with the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, the Beaverton Police Department and local emergency managers. Our Public Safety Office has been working with local law enforcement and building administrators to implement the Standard Response Protocol and the Standard Reunification Method. I encourage you to visit our Public Safety webpage to familiarize yourself with these plans. We also are improving safety through a number of bond construction projects, thanks to the wonderful support of our Beaverton community.
As much as we proactively train and plan for emergency situations, tragedies like this event in Florida are certainly difficult to comprehend. We know it may trigger emotional responses among our students, parents, staff and community members, and we will do all we can to support them. Knowing what to say at home with your own children or family members can be challenging. In times like these, talking things over openly and of course in an age-appropriate manner is helpful. I also know that as parents and family members you will navigate this carefully and decide about doing what is best at home for your own children.

Take care. Thank you for your ongoing support.
Sincerely,
Don Grotting

Pennies for Patients
Dear Cedar Mill Families,
The 5th grade leadership team is conducting a fundraiser during the week of 2/20-2/23. Pennies for Patients supports the Leukemia and Lymphoma society’s mission to cure blood cancers and improve the lives of patients. Each student will come home with a pennies for patients donation box this Friday. If you would like to support this fundraiser, please have your child bring their box back to school and the 5th grade leadership team will collect these boxes each morning. Thank you very much for your support!
Sincerely,
Chris Marino
Register for Kindergarten Now
Kindergarten registration for Fall 2018 is now open to Beaverton resident students. Students must be five years of age on or before September 1st, per State Statute, and live within the attendance boundary of our school. We invite you to register early as this assists us in confirming enrollment for staffing purposes. Please present a birth certificate or passport that the office may copy for your child's enrollment file. Beaverton School District provides full-day kindergarten in all elementary schools. Feel free to share this information with your neighbors who have their first child starting kindergarten next fall.
Please plan to join us on March 15 if you have a child entering kindergarten at Cedar Mill this fall. Parents will receive an overview of the program while the incoming Kindergarteners enjoy an activity with our Kindergarten team.
Please contact the school office at 503-356-2050 for registration information.

School Board Passes Resolution to Authorize Local Option Levy Renewal
The Beaverton School Board on Monday, Jan. 22, 2018 unanimously adopted a resolution to place a 5-year Local Option Levy Renewal on the May 15, 2018 ballot. This is a vote-by-mail election.
If approved, the Local Option Levy Renewal would allow Beaverton schools to preserve 300 teaching positions, maintain class sizes, and help ensure students are prepared for post-high school success. The levy renewal costs $1.25 per $1,000 assessed property value. Homes with the median assessed value of $238,000 would continue to pay less than $25 per month. The levy could raise approximately $31-$35 million a year.
In 2013, voters approved a five-year local option levy to restore teaching positions that had been cut due to repeated state funding shortfalls. The levy has raised $128 million, and 100% has remained in Beaverton schools to fund approximately 300 teaching positions and reduce class sizes. In the 2017-2018 school year, 158 of these positions were allocated to Beaverton's elementary schools, 53 to middle schools, 70 to high schools, and 18 to options schools. (Six teachers at Cedar Mill are funded through the current Local Option Levy.)
