The 1990's
The last decade of the 20th century was a time of major change. New media was popping up everywhere; such as the world wide web and cable television. Advances in science took major leaps forward with the Hubble Telescope and Dolly the Sheep. Our culture continued to change even further with musical movements such as Grunge, Rave, and Hip Hop starting to spread globally. The ever changing culture in the 1990's shows that people were chasing their goals and accomplishing the American Dream that we all strive for.
Artifacts
Novel: Into Thin Air
The book Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer follows Krakauer on his journey of scaling the tallest peak in the world, Mt. Everest. Climbing Mt. Everest is the pinnacle of a climbers carrier, and striving to achieve a goal as immense as this is what we call the American Dream. Doing what we want to do and not letting anything get in our way is the way of the Dream.
Movie: The Shawshank Redemprtion
The Shawshank Redemption tells the story of Andy Defrene, a wrongly convicted man, and his journey to redemption. Defrene faces many challenges and despite all of the trials he faces, Defrene doesn't let anything get in his way. This movie is set in the fifties but the fact that it's made in the 90's shows that the people of the nineties believed in doing what they want and not letting society stand in their way, just as Defrene did not let his wrong conviction stop him from achieving his dream.

Fashion: Neon to Grunge
The clothes of the 1990's varied greatly. There was a carry over of the neon from the 80's into the early part of the nineties. Then there was a massive spread of grunge and hip hop fashion. The great range of styles showed that people of the 90's weren't holding back anymore, they would dress how they liked.
Photography: The People
Photography in the 90's chooses to focus on the people. Photographers like Christopher Wool, Sue Williams, and Raoul Vaneigem document this decade by depicting the cultural changes and movements in there photos.
