Irish Americans

By: Victoriana Neeley

I am doing my presentation on the Irish Americans!

Why They Came To The USA

The laws made it harder for the Irish Catholics to own land. Most farmland was given to the rich. Ireland farmers had to rent farmland and if they couldn't pay rent they were thrown out of their house. Usually people who did not farm were very poor and many even had to beg for food. They decided to look for a way to live a better life. Another reason was for religious freedom

The First Irish Americans

They began coming as soon as England had colonies. Some were soldiers in the English army!

Indentured servants ( those who paid the cost of there trip by working for years! Others were criminals whose punishment was to work in colonies

When Did They Arrive?

They arrived between the time of 1820 to 1860, most Irish immigrants arrived in port cities, Like New York (NY), Pennsylvania (PA), Georgia, Wisconsin (WI), New Orelands (NO).

By 1940 the Irish made up 1/2 of all immigrants in the USA.
