North News - 12/30/2016
Message from Mr. Ulbrich
I want to take this time to thank the students and parents of PHSN for an outstanding first semester. Everyone worked together to tackle the changes to the new schedule and start and end time of the school day. Changes have been made or are in the works based on the valuable suggestions we received from you. This process is what makes PHSN such an amazing place. Thanks so much for your input!!
"May every day of the new year glow with good cheer and happiness for you and your family." Happy New Year PHSN!

Notes from our School Counselors
Happy New Year from the Pickerington High School North School Counselors!
As we begin 2017, it is important that students prepare every day to do their very best! Regular attendance at school and completing assignments and homework consistently is vitally important for academic success. The new semester brings a fresh start in every class and the chance to improve their academic performance. Please encourage your student to seek assistance from their teacher first. If they continue to struggle, the student should contact their school counselor or administrator for academic support during Enrichment and Intervention time or during their study halls in Panther Point. We want 2017 to be a successful year for all students!
All students received a copy of their second semester schedule before leaving for the winter break. Please make sure they bring that schedule to school when they return on January 4th. If they have misplaced it, they can print another copy of their schedule from their campus portal. Students must follow the schedule they were given. Very few schedule adjustments will be made as most classes are year-long classes and students are not permitted to drop elective classes that they requested.
Approximately sixty percent of our seniors have submitted applications to college. For those who have not yet applied, please monitor upcoming college deadlines. Many of the colleges popular with North students have February 1st regular decision deadlines including: Bowling Green, Ohio University, Ohio State University, University of Cincinnati, University of Dayton, and Miami. Remember that the school counseling department requires 10 days to process college application materials. In order to meet the February 1st regular decision deadlines, students should submit their transcript request forms to the School Counseling Office by January 17th, 2017.
Seniors are encouraged check the Priority Financial Aid deadlines for the colleges they have applied to and submit their FAFSA and other financial aid documents to the college by those deadlines. Seniors should check their Naviance account for additional scholarship opportunities including many local scholarships. All scholarships that come through the School Counseling Office are posted on Naviance under the Colleges tab. Scroll to the bottom of the page under Scholarships and Money and click on the Scholarship List. Seniors should check this list frequently during the next few months as it is updated daily. Seniors should also check the college’s websites for additional scholarship opportunities offered by the individual college or university.
Members of the Class of 2018 (this year’s juniors) should be preparing for the free ACT test that they will take on April 19th, 2017 at North. All juniors have access to an online ACT test prep program through their Naviance account and have been shown how to access that program to prepare for the ACT. Parents please help us make sure your child takes full advantage of that program to improve their performance on the ACT. Encourage your son or daughter to spend 20-30 minutes 3 - 4 times a week practicing for the ACT on their Naviance Test Prep account.
FInally, here is a link to a US News and World Report article on New Year’s Resolutions for high school students: http://www.usnews.com/education/blogs/college-admissions-playbook/articles/2016-12-27/4-new-years-resolutions-for-college-bound-high-school-students
New Year’s resolution for freshmen: I will set college admission goals now, rather than waiting until I am a junior.
New Year’s resolution for sophomores: I will develop an ACT and SAT testing plan now, not as a junior.
New Year’s resolution for juniors: I will begin my college applications two months earlier that I believe I should.
New Year’s resolution for seniors: I will remember that admissions decisions do not solely determine my intelligence or my future.
Have a wonderful 2017!
