Vicksburg
The battle over the Mississippi
Why the Mississippi River?
- If the Union takes the river then the CSA will be cut in half
- Part of the Anaconda Plan was to take the river
- The river provides trade routes for the South
When and Where?
- The battle ended July 4, 1863
- The city of Vicksburg is in Mississippi
Who Were the Generals on Both Sides?
- The CSA general was Pemberton
- Grant, in my opinion, was way more intimidating and he was clearly a better general because he led the Union to a victory
What was the Outcome and Why?
- The Union out numbered CSA troops by about 23000
-Grant was a better general than Pemberton
-CSA ran out of food and supplies so they were forced to surrender
What was the Significance?
- Union cuts the CSA in half
- It was hard for the Eastern part and the Western part of the CSA to communicate and transfer supplies
-Inspired Sherman's March
-Also inspired Sheridian's Shenandoah campaign, (Valley Campaign), that ended the civil war
