The J-Hawk Experience!
Info you need to know for week of October 8 - 12!
Message from the principal
On Friday night, many UHS fall activities were represented for senior night as the J-Hawk football team hosted their last home regular season game of the year. It's a special time at the end of each season to recognize seniors for their leadership and years of commitment to representing the blue and white of Urbandale High School for their respective sports and activities. Our students put in a great deal of time and commitment to participate and achieve at high levels in their respective programs...some participating in multiple programs at the same time.
I'm always humbled by the representation not only of the seniors for all of the work they do but also for their parents and family members who have been there to support them over the years. All of the drop-offs at early morning practices, all of the pick-ups from late night tournaments, all of the celebration following a big win, all of the encouragement after a disappointing loss, all of the tears wiped away after a season-ending injury...our students' parents, family members, and friends, really work to be there to help them get so much out of what our activities programs have to offer.
Below are a few pictures of our band seniors and their parents/family members as they lined up across the length of the track. Another example of a great group of seniors!
Thank you to all of our seniors in these and other programs for leading. It has been and will continue to be a great 2018-19 school year! And thank you to their parents, family members, and friends, for being their to lift up our seniors. You are making a difference in their lives!
Sincerely,
Tim Carver
Principal

Lunch Schedule 5th period (6th period on Wednesdays)

5B Class - 11:38 - 12:19
5B Lunch - 12:24 12:49Exciting changes to UHS for fall 2018 with I.E.S.!
As we continue to expand and enhance opportunities for access to teachers to support learning, UHS is rolling out some exciting changes to support students learning by adding I.E.S. (Intervention, Extension, Study table) between 3rd and 4th per
iods on Fridays, Mondays, and Tuesdays. We continue to have a modified-block schedule (8 classes on Monday, Tuesday, Friday, and 4 block periods on Wednesday and Thursday along with Connections).
However, we have created time in school day on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays, to have guaranteed access for teachers to have with students. We are reallocating time from 5th period (in past years 11 minutes longer than all other periods in the day) along with using Connections time to create additional time on those days.
Students started signing up using an online program called FlexiSCHED on Thursdays, starting on Thursday, September 12th, during Connections for their I.E.S. time for the next three days (Friday, Monday, Tuesday). A student will attend the same location during that three day cycle and then sign up the following Thursday for a new offering for the upcoming Friday, Monday, and Tuesday cycle. This process will repeat each week.
Students will continue to review this process to sign up for I.E.S. in Connections as they sign up for I.E.S each Thursday in Connections. Students can sign up for I.E.S. sessions between 9:20am-1:00pm each Thursday for the upcoming cycle (Friday, Monday, Tuesday).

ACE Mentor Program
Founded in 1994, the ACE name stands for Architecture, Construction and Engineering. The program stands for mentoring high school students and inspiring them to pursue careers in design and construction. It is now the construction industry’s most respected high school mentoring program with tens of thousands of students and growing.
Imagine designing a new Nolen Plaza or a new cafe and printing center, a new Principal Riverwalk facility or a stadium while you are still in high school. In your dreams?...Not anymore. Thanks to the ACE (Architect, Construction and Engineering) Mentor Program hundreds of high school students are designing real life projects under the direction of the local top design, engineering and construction individuals.
Led by mentors. Driven by you. As a participant, you will join a team of other students led by adult mentors who are practicing industry professionals. ACE is not about merely describing specific professions. It is about immersing you in the actual profession:
Architects
Interior Designers
Landscape Architects
Mechanical Engineers
Structural Engineers
Electrical Engineers
Environmental Engineers
Civil Engineers
Construction Managers
College and University Representatives
What to expect : You will visit professional offices, job sites and other relevant locations. You will discuss the same issues, and perform the same tasks, as if you worked in the industry. ACE gives you a practical hands on view of the everyday reality of a job.
Opportunities abound: ACE is your chance to learn about different construction industry careers and discover which one might be right for you. It is also a great way to connect with other students who share your passions.
Become an ACE student: If you are ready to take the first step, we are ready to help. Start by visiting www.acementor.org for more information and to apply.
The ACE Mentor Program is open to any high school student who has the curiosity and drive to learn about a career in design and construction. Already, more than 50,000 students have enjoyed the exciting projects, informative field trips and other engaging activities that make up the ACE experience.
There is no substitute for experience. The ACE Mentor Program is driven by the committed and enthusiastic participation of volunteer mentors who are practicing professionals in their respective fields. Who are ACE mentors? In our experience, ACE mentors tend to be members of a local community in which an ACE affiliate is located. Clearly passionate about what they do, they often make significant contributions to their communities as role models, trusted friends and career advisors.
How it works: You are assigned to a team of 15- 25 students. Mentors from participating companies adopt your team for the school year meeting with you from Nov. 1 through early March every Tuesday after school. They show you how designers and builders think and work.
The Design Project: Your Ultimate Challenge - Under the guidance of your mentor, your team develops an actual engineering or architectural design project. You learn and apply certain skills such as problem solving, teamwork, and design/construction practices. Once completed your team presents to students, teachers and parents.
Are you interested in one of the following? This program is for you! Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Interior Design, Planning, Civil, Structural, Geotechnical, Electrical, Mechanical and Construction Engineering, welding masonry, carpentry.

A note from Silver Cord Committe to UHS students - UPDATE September 25
Silver Cord students -- you are all AMAZING! So far this school year, you have performed over 4,000 hours of service, which is over half of what you did for the whole school year last year! The Class of 2022 is off to a roaring start, performing 1808 hours since June. We are so excited to see all the good you can do in an entire year!
We have lots of fun activities coming up -- fall parties, park and yard cleanup events, child care, homework help for elementary and middle school students, and food pantry needs. Check out the Silver Cord information site (there are 6 pages!) for details. Some of these opportunities can be done every week, which is a great way to earn your hours while building relationships.
If you haven't started earning hours, it's easy! Find an opportunity on our site, or find your own. Print off an hours verification form (attached) before you go. Do the service, and before you leave, fill out the form and have an organizer sign it. Turn it in to the UHS Main Office, and watch your hours grow while you do great things for your community!
Remember, if you have over 40 hours of service recorded on the Silver Cord Ladder, go visit Mrs. Strong in Room 212 to pick up your FREE Silver Cord volunteer t-shirt!
As always, we are here to answer any questions you have. Feel free to reach out, and keep on doing good!
