Supporting the Ben Kende Foundation (an ex-Glenealy Student)
As the rugby sevens weekend approaches, it’s always a time when Glenealy School works with a number of community organisations to help and support Ben through his charity which was established in 2011 by friends, teachers, rugby clubs and the medical community. A rising star of Hong Kong rugby, Ben sustained a spinal cord injury while representing the territory at the Asian Junior Championship in August 2010 and since then has been adjusting to life as a tetraplegic with limited use of his arms and no use of his legs.
Ben had always been a very talented athlete and scholar. Born and raised in Hong Kong and as a boy attended Glenealy School and Island School along with his sisters. His parents were very involved in our school too. Ben’s friends designed a T shirt to sell at this time of the year - we have some adult sizes available from school and these will be in the playground if you’d like to donate. Otherwise we encourage all families to give a little donation tomorrow to help and support Ben now and in the future. Once a Glenealy student, always part of the family. You can find out more about Ben’s story here.
IB World Conference
Dave and I attended this conference over the last few days. This gave us a number of opportunities to share practise, learn from other’s experiences and research, update ourselves with the latest philosophies and practises of the IB and network with colleagues from schools around the world. Dave and Trish Oliver also presented a workshop putting Glenealy on the map!
School Counsellor
We have a school counsellor working with us two days per week. If you would like further information please click here. If you are interested in accessing this service please contact your child’s teacher, Jennine Harding or one of the senior management team.
ESF/Glenealy Calendar for 2018/19

PTA News- Message from Christine Meaney
A Special Thank You!
I’m sorry to write and share the news that Erika Dominique, our PTA Coordinator, is moving on and this will be her last week working with us. Erika will be sorely missed as she has made a fantastic contribution to the work of the PTA in her time here. However, she is excited about this next stage and I am sure you will join with the PTA Committee in wishing her well in her new role. On the bright side, Erika remains a part of the Glenealy community as mum to Penny (Yr 2) and Xavier, who starts Year 1 in August. Thanks for all you’ve done, Erika!

CAN YOU LIVE WITHOUT YOUR HELPER CHALLENGE
Between Monday and Friday last week, some students from Year 6 participated in the Can You Live Without Your Helper challenge. We spent the week doing jobs like making our own breakfast; tidying our bedrooms; looking after pets; washing clothes and dishes and much more! Making meals was the most difficult. We hadn’t even realised how long it takes to prepare a meal, especially when it takes such a short time to eat it! We felt proud that we were able to do these jobs by ourselves and some of us would like to continue with them even though the challenge is over. By the end of the challenge, we felt very tired and much more appreciative of all the things (big and small) that our helpers do for us every day.
I hope our action encourages people to be grateful for their helpers and to remember to say thank you!
Bread Run Action
Last Thursday 15th March, we went on a bread run organised by Feeding Hong Kong. Our parents drove us from our houses at around 7:30pm to some bakeries ( Maxim’s, Arome, Saint Honore) and took the leftover bread to the Feeding HK Food Bank in Yau Tong. Raenia’s group collected 61 pieces of bread from Arome bakery.
Besides bread, the food bank also contained sandwiches, snacks, canned food, rice, water, juice, salads and cereal too. We got a chance to go into the fridge to see what was kept inside.
They stored some occasional meat and vegetables too.
The leader of the food bank was called Adrian. She said at least 3,600 tons of food got wasted every day- that's equal to 220 double decker buses!
The needy people who get the food we picked up and delivered live on only $30 a day. The money has to cover the electricity, and simple living costs.
Live Zero Store Action
On Friday 16th March, Year 6 went to the Live Zero shop in PMQ, Central.
The shop was chosen as an example of how we can be more responsible with what we buy.
The Live Zero store is a pop up store that is selling recycled everyday used items or items that help reduce plastic and are not packaged in plastic. They also have a store in Sai Ying Pun that sells food that is not packaged and you have to bring your own bags.
We went there to learn about recycling, reducing and reusing everyday things. You could buy a variety of things there e.g. a bar of shampoo that was solid, metal straws, chalk paint and reusable coffee cups.
We now will really think about what we buy next time we go shopping and make a responsible choice.
