In the Classroom

It's going to be a great week in first grade! We're ready for fall! This week it's all about apples! Today we wrote about what we wanted to learn about apples and this will guide our learning. Some student questions were: "How much does an apple weigh?" "How do you make apple pie, apple sauce, and apple juice?" "How does an apple grow?" "Why do apples come in different colors?" We will be finding the answers to these questions using books, Scholastic News magazine, our prior knowledge, and websites.

Growing as Writers

Writing is an important part of first grade. First graders are learning how to generate ideas easily and write stories with at least 3 details. Last week students wrote about things they like to do with their friends. Writing at home can be easy and fun. Work together to create a grocery list, chore list, or note!

Learning This Week

Word Work- This week's sight words are: get, ten, when, the, and my. This week's word family is -et (let, jet, pet, get, met, net).

Reading- This week students will learn features of fiction, including identifying characters and setting. Students should recognize differences between fiction and nonfiction and be able to decide if a book is fiction or nonfiction by the end of first quarter.

Writing- As writers, we get ideas from our daily experiences and the books we read. Our goal this year is to easily generate ideas to write about from books and our experiences.

Math- Students will explore subtraction strategies. By the end of first grade, students should be able to fluently subtract within 1-10 and have strategies to subtract within 1-20.

Science- This week we will study apples. Students should be able to describe the life cycle of an apple tree and identify ways we use apples after harvest.

Our attendance goal at Sweeny is 96% or higher. Our class attendance last week was 97.54%! In our class we say, "If you're not at school, you're not learning!"
