2 Days of Stimulating Interactions at the Education Experts Conference 2017 - 2nd Edition at Zayed University in Dubai UAE
Dr Tassos Anastasiades participated as a speaker in the conference talking about using benchmark data such as GL and IBT to identify start points and validate formative assessment; Measuring progress using age related steps and learning ladders, planning interventions based on less than expected progress and links next step marking to drive student independent learning and progress.
This is an innovative approach where parents and students can track their own learning and is being led by Ajman Academy.
Also Dr. Anastasiades represented Ajman Academy as moderator of the panel to discuss the Achieving the National Agenda Targets – Challenges for Education
Education is a fundamental element for the development of a nation and the best investment in its youth. For that reason, the UAE Vision 2021 National Agenda emphasizes the development of a first-rate education system, which will require a complete transformation of the current education system and teaching methods. The National Agenda aims to equip all schools, universities and students with Smart systems and devices as a basis for all teaching methods, projects and research. There will also be significant investments to promote and reinforce enrollment in preschools as this is critical to shaping children's personalities and their future. Furthermore, the National Agenda aims to enable the UAE students rank among the best in the world in reading, mathematics and science exams, and to have a strong knowledge of the Arabic language.
The panel included Professor Abdullah Alshamsi, Vice Chancellor, The British University in Dubai, Professor Muthanna G. Abdul Razzaq,President and CEO, American University in the Emirate, Dr. Björn Kjerfve, Chancellor, American University of Sharjah (AUS), UAE, Dr. Rana Tamim, Acting Dean - College of Education, Zayed University.
AJAC celebrated Earth Day
The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award
Physical Recreation includes any sporting activity; many of the students train and represent the school in swimming, basketball and football matches, whilst others prefer to develop their fitness at the gym.
The Skill section requires students develop an existing skill, or pursue new knowledge; currently IA students are developing their skills in Quranic recitation, journalistic writing, acting, photography and debating.
Students have to voluntarily commit their time to helping a community or community group for the Service section; students have assisted at sporting events and with activities in the Primary school to fulfill the requirements of this section, developing their ability to work with all age groups and building their understanding of the planning and preparation that takes place behind the scenes of any event or activity.
The final section, and by far the students’ favourite, is the Adventurous Journey! Students have to undertake an exploratory journey in which they remain self-sufficient over a set period of time - for the Bronze level, two days and one night.
The photographs here show the students on the Bronze Training and Practice Adventurous Journey Weekend run by myself and Mark Pollitt; the groups’ assessor was Lisa Pollitt. The students were trained to map read and navigate using a compass, route plan, set up camp, cook outdoors, pack a rucksack and some basic first aid, before heading out to explore the theme of ‘Old and New’ in areas of Ajman and Ras Al Khaimah.
The International Award provides a great opportunity for students to build their skills and confidence beyond the classroom and we look forward to many more students joining us on the Award journey next year.
