Early Background
Born in April 27 1820, in Derbyshire England. He was the son of William George Spencer, who ran a school based on the teaching methods of Johan Pestalozzi. The school was also founded by Erasmus Darwin, who was the grandfather of Charles Darwin. Herbert was lower-middle class.
