Duncan Creek Elementary
January 2019
Dear Parents,
As this is the first newsletter of 2019, let me take a moment to wish all of you a Happy New Year! I hope your winter break was filled with memorable times with family and friends.
February is a month packed with learning and fun. Duncan Creek events for February include:
- February 1st – Reflections Recognition Breakfast 8:00am
- February 7th – SMART (Science, Math, Art, Reading, Technology) Night 6:00pm
- February 15th – Snow Make Up Day (No School)
- February 18th – Teacher Workday
- February 20th & 21st – Early Release Days (Parent-Teacher Conferences)
- February 22nd – Father/Daughter Dance at MCHS 6:30pm
It is very hard to believe we are already at the point to begin planning for the 2019-2020 school year. One of the major tasks before us is the formation of classes for next year. You are welcome to submit a form containing information to help us make the best match for your child. Please submit all forms by February 12th. This will be a firm deadline. The link to the form is available on the school website and hard copies are available at the front lobby desk.
Please carefully read over the page covering promotion requirements for this school year. Promotion information was presented during Curriculum Nights in August and have been updated. In addition to proficiency on grade level Academic Knowledge and Skills (AKS), the Georgia Milestones End of Grade (EOG) Assessment is part of the promotion requirements this year in grades 3 (Reading) and 5 (Reading & Math).
We are now in the second half of the school year. Please try to make sure your child is at school every day. We have so much teaching and learning to do that cannot be replicated when a child is absent. We will continue to work hard and finish the year strong.
Sincerely,
CarrieYougel
Principal
Digital Citizenship-Balancing Digital Media Use
A digital citizen is a person who develops the skills and knowledge to effectively use the Internet and other digital technology, especially in order to participate responsibly in social and civic activities. (Definition from Dictionary.com) We will focus each month on a topic for Digital Citizenship.
This month's focus is on Balancing Media Use.
Media includes streaming TV shows, playing online games, playing on your phone or tablet, watching TV or movies, and surfing the internet
It’s important to find a media balance between offline and online activities.
A healthy media balance is good for your body, your brain, and your relationships.
Media balance varies from person to person.
Playing online shouldn’t get in the way of sleep, playing with friends, work, or school.

I cannot believe the first half of the year is over!! Time is flying by so quickly. For the first half of the year the lower grade students completed locomotor skills, ball skills and a parachute unit. We have just begun our tumbling unit. They also learned several bones and had a quiz to see how well they knew them. We have now moved on to muscles and they will be tested at the end of the year.
3rd- 5th grade students completed volleyball, and flag football units, while 3rd grade added a skating unit along with volleyball and football. We have now begun a ball handling skills unit for upper grades.
Mckenzie Prince, Luke Lawson, Brady Flesner and Lexi Favreau represented Duncan Creek at the Elks Hoop Shoot Jan 12. Mckenzie, and Lexi will be moving on to the next round. GOOD LUCK GIRLS!!
The week of Valentines Day we will begin our Jump Rope for Heart fund-raiser. Last year we were 2nd in the county for funds raised. This year I would love to be #1. The students will have the opportunity to strive to make the jumping clubs ( jumping for certain amounts of time) and they will also have the opportunity to help those that are less fortunate and earn some cool prizes. Please look for more information in February.
If your child is good at baseball/softball Pitch Hit and Run will take place in April. We will have the first round of the competition here and if your child wins their age group they will advance to the sectionals at Cool Ray Field.
Please make sure your child is wearing sneakers on their PE days, otherwise they will not be allowed to participate.
Stay Healthy,
Dayna Alkire
