Guiding English Language Learners Towards Academic Success

Midwestern Intermediate Unit IV

The 2nd professional development workshop in the English Language Learners (ELL) Professional Development Series.

Designed to address all four domains of the Charlotte Danielson’s Framework for Teaching, this workshop will provide participants interaction with a student-centered, teacher-focused approach to learning.

Participants will be introduced to the World-Class Instructional Design and Assessment (WIDA) Standards Framework which includes: The Guiding Principles of Language Development, Can-Do Philosophy, features of academic language, performance definitions, and standards matrix. Features of the amplified matrix, the elements of a model performance indicator (MPI), and the role of the MPI in creating language objectives connected to content will be explored with hands-on activities, small group work, and discussions.

Participants will leave the session with a strong foundation of designing objectives and tasks using the Model Performance Indicators language function, content stem, and support structure for supporting student academic success.

It is suggested that a classroom teacher and the ESL teacher attend together.
