Let's Build!
Week of February 6 - 12, 2023
Updates for the Week
Hello Wilkesboro families!
We hope that you’ve enjoyed this weekend, and here are some updates for the week of February 6-10, 2023. You can find full details and links on our weekly WE BUILD page below.
We would like to remind you that Wednesday, February 8 is an early release day. We will dismiss school at 12:30. Please be prepared to receive students off the bus early and please communicate with your teacher if you need to make a transportation change. The YMCA after school program will NOT operate on Wednesday.
Our PTO would like to invite your family to a fun event called a family dance on Sunday, February 12 from 3:00 - 5:00. Our gym will be transformed into Parisian streets for “A Night in Paris”, and families can gather to spend time together, dance, play games, and enjoy delicious treats. Some families use this as an opportunity to dress up and have an affordable, memorable day out. PTO will have a photographer on hand to capture this special event. PTO only hosts this event every few years, so make plans to attend now. We sent home a flier with details, and you can buy tickets through the PTO website which can be found on our WE BUILD page. If you would like to order tickets with cash and don't want to order online, please contact Mrs. Spears directly on Class Dojo or by email. https://wes.wilkescountyschools.org/apps/news/article/1718504
On Thursday evening, we will host a parent advisory meeting at 6:00 in the media center. The purpose of this meeting will be to share updates on our school’s progress, learn more about our school’s programs, meet other parents, and share feedback with our school. We will discuss our school's participation as a Title 1 school, safety responses, instructional programs, field trips, and other school events. All parents and guardians are welcome.
On Friday, Strawbridge Photography will be here to take class pictures. All children and teachers will be featured in class pictures, and it will be a great way to capture this memorable year. We’ve got a great background selected for our builders. If you’d like to order a picture, please return the envelope and payment to school by Wednesday or pay online through our school website. https://wes.wilkescountyschools.org/apps/news/article/1713503
We have officially kicked off our Kids Heart Challenge for the American Heart Association. Over the next few weeks, we will be educating our students on heart, brain and vascular health, and meeting kids with special hearts! Students can register online and take the challenge to Be Active or Be Kind. We want 100% of our students and their families to sign up online, and no donation is required. You can find links on our WE BUILD page and in ClassDojo with directions. We are also collecting donations for the American Heart Association where students can earn prizes toward being heart heroes. We will collect donations on Fridays through February 24, and this Friday, February 10 will be our first donation collection date. Donations can also be made online. We are still taking orders for our 2023 yearbook. You can order a yearbook by returning the envelope and payment to school OR by ordering directly online from our website by March 1. https://wes.wilkescountyschools.org/apps/news/article/1704688

Kids Heart Challenge Now Through Feb. 24!

Over the next few weeks, we will be educating our students on heart, brain and vascular health, and meeting kids with special hearts! Students can register online and take the challenge to Be Active or Be Kind. We want 100% of our students and their families to sign up online, and no donation is required. We Love Field Trips
Field trips are a special part of school, and we are excited for students to enjoy these learning experiences again. Field trips allow students to experience new environments, learn in unique places, apply skills learned in the classroom, and connect with the real world around us. Our teachers have planned 4 to 5 field trips for each grade level.
All students are included in field trips. We calculate the cost of field trips to include gas and driver pay for bus transportation and admission tickets. Costs are calculated based on every student participating. All students will ride on our bus transportation to field trips, and we will also provide regular free lunch (or snack) for students through our cafeteria. We invite parent chaperones to attend many field trips (separate cost for parents) but not all. Some trips, like those to the JAWCC, are required by Wilkes County Schools. Click here for full details about field trips for the 2022-2023 school year!
You can pay online through the K-12 Payment Center. Click here for a link to our website about how to pay for field trips online. You can also donate to help a student here.
If you'd like to donate to help make field trips affordable for all, please contact our office at 336-838-4261.
If your family needs assistance with paying for field trips for a student, please complete this form to let us know of your needs. This form must be completed for every student in your family who needs assistance. A staff member will contact you to follow up.
Lunch Menu
Click here for full menus for all WCS.
K-5th graders will have ice cream on Friday. Cost increased to $1.25 due to WCS rising cost. You can pay online here using your child's ID number (see bookbag tag).
We welcome you to join your student for lunch on a day that is convenient for you. Read here for full details and lunch schedules about how to join us for lunch.
Build Language!
This year, we are working to build reading comprehension skills of all students through speaking and listening. Our routine for October is content vocabulary. We are focusing on the skills of knowing specific words for each content, like math, science, and social studies.
These oral language skills are essential for building language and reading comprehension skills in kids of all ages.
Volunteers Needed!
We are currently seeking future volunteers to serve as chaperones on field trips throughout the year. If you would like to help with a field trip with your child, please see the volunteer form below for how to sign up to be a volunteer at WES. Signing up lasts for 2 years, but must be completed every 2 years.
We Need Volunteers!
We welcome volunteers to help with school events. WCS uses Volunteer Tracker to help organize this process, and we use Sign Up Genius (shared via email and ClassDojo) to make signing up easy and convenient. To get signed up, follow steps below.
1. Go to www.wilkescountyschools.org
2. Go to the PARENTS tab at the top (or VOLUNTEER at the bottom).
3. Click on VOLUNTEERS.
4. Click on VOLUNTEER TRACKER.
5. Go to the green NEW REGISTRATION and follow instructions from there.
Level 1 volunteers can help in many ways. Level 1 volunteers can sign up to help with book fairs, school events, class parties and projects, Field Day, Fall Festival, and proctoring for tests.
Level 2 volunteers can do all level 1 tasks but can also help chaperone field trips and work more closely with students in small groups. Level 2 volunteers can also sign up for classroom tutoring and assistance, reading buddy program, tutoring, leading after school activities, and chaperoning school events field trips.
We ask that all parents/guardians who plan to attend field trips sign up to be Level 2 volunteers at the start of the year. It takes a few weeks to verify volunteers, and signing up early will make sure that you are approved in time for this year’s events and field trips.

About Attendance
School starts at 7:50 each day. Students who are participating will be marked PRESENT or ABSENT. If your child is not in school, you will need to send in absence notes the next day and it will be coded as excused or unexcused. Written notes are required and can come directly from the parent/guardian or a medical office. Also note that ClassDojo messages are great for communicating an absence, but they do NOT serve as legal documentation of absences. Please send a written note. Thanks in advance for your help!
