Each week administrators and instructional coaches will highlight the growth in the instructional practices, creativity, purposeful and meaningful practices that promote student success. It is important that we recognize ALL the Excellence in Teaching we have in all of areas of our academic programs. The highlights are on a rotation throughout the year and each content/department will be the focus for the week.
Mrs. Quintana
Mrs. Quintana does an amazing job of adjusting her instruction and response strategies based on the climate of her room.
For example, based on the lack of verbal responses she was receiving, she taught her students letters in sign language to check their understanding of the differences between, speed, velocity, and acceleration.
She quickly went from a few responses to 100% participation. Afterwards, her students came to her wanting to know how to spell their own names!
Mrs. Quintana is demonstrating her love of being a life-long learner by bringing what she's learning directly back to her own classroom and enriching the learning of her scholars.
Mr. Smalls
Mr. Smalls immediately implements key action steps from coaching and is reflective of ways to improve.
Thank you Mr. Smalls for your dedication and pursuit of Excellence!!! Keep it Up!!!

Mr. Jenkins is an awesome teacher who sincerely connects with his AVID students. I’m grateful to be his SEL assistant and watch as he reaches his kids on a relatable and relevant level.
Spotlight on Morning Arrival - 8th Grade Team
A tremendous thank you to the focus and teamwork happening at the 8th grade door in the AM. This is the largest class and making sure safety is a priority and greeting scholars with a welcoming smile is evident. We made some adjustments and additions and it has worked very well, thank you to everyone for your fortitude and positive attitudes.
Thank you to Ms. Hudson, Mr. Stewart, Ms. Webb, and Ms. Gillespie for ensuring everything is checked thoroughly. Hats off to Mrs. Mhlanga who is diligent at the metal detector making sure students are in dress code and nothing is missed.
In the cafeteria, Mr. Garcia is welcoming students and ensuring flow of traffic through cafeteria never stops. Ms. Grieb is supporting students gathering their things and moving purposefully to 1st period. Thank you to Ms. Walker for encouraging scholars down the hallway and to the "penthouse".
Teamwork is happening outside with Mr. Cofer securing all the athletic bags, Mr. Green and Mr. Seales ensuring students are safe and in line and moving consistently to the door. I enjoy being at the door welcoming the Class of 2023!! Way to go team!!
Spotlight on Mrs. Takats, Ms. William-Sanders, Ms. Collier (Ms. Okeke's substitute), Ms. Larsen
I would like to spotlight Ms. Takat's, Ms. Williams-Sanders and Ms. Okeke's class's substitute, Ms. Collier. They brought their classes to the library for speed/read dating with a book. Students had a great time and despite Ms. Okeke being out, her students did well.
I would also like to spotlight Ms. Larsen for making the beautiful tribute for my mom as an example in her art class for a project her students were working on. It really touched me.
Spotlight on Mr. Reilly and Ms. Taylor
Mr. Reilly:
I'd like to shout out Mr. Reilly for being a great addition to our math squad! (See what I did there? lol) He has jumped head first into lesson planning and helping with Performance Matters. We are so grateful to have Mr. Reilly on the team.
Ms. Taylor:
I'd also like to place a spotlight on Ms. Taylor. On our Fair Day (Friday), I lost my ID and bank card and she came up to the school to let me look into my classroom! Turns out I left it at my local Wingstop (not my best moment) but I am thankful for a principal that would leave the nail salon to help a teacher!
Spotlight on Mr. Jenkins
I continue to be impressed by Mr. Jenkins and how he models respect and thoughtfulness to our scholars. He organized our AVID college trip to Texas A&M Commerce this Saturday. In addition to the efforts that went into making this possible I truly appreciated how he spoke to students about what to think about as they were on the college campus - it should not be aimless. Throughout the day he was constantly focused on the scholars getting the most of their time on the college campus!
Before we got off the bus, he stopped all the scholars and thank them for being there, aspiration words for what they learned, reminded them to thank chaperones and the bus driver and to have a good rest of their weekend. Our scholars conducted them with respect and thanked everyone. Mr. Jenkins models graciousness, patience, and belief in who are scholars are and all they can be. Happy ARSA is your school home!
Spotlight on Ms. Williams- Sanders and Mrs. Crabtree
Thank you both for giving of your Saturday to be with our scholars while they expanded their horizons at the AVID College visit to Texas A&M Commerce. We can not take scholars on trips without staff and both of you were so helpful and encouraging of our scholars!
