Early Years Chinese Readers Workshop -13th April

To provide more opportunites for our Early Years children to practice their Chinese language skills, we will be launching the Early Years Chinese Readers programme during the Summer Term. We hope that parents can support their children with reading at home. Please come to the workshop on 13th April from 8.00 a.m. to 8.30 a.m. in the Dance Studio to find out more.

We start the reading programme for all Early Year children from the Summer Term onwards and 1 or 2 readers will be sent home per unit. The first reader for all Grades will be sent home next Friday. The Chinese teachers will read with the children in class before sending the reader home on Friday. The children are required to return the book the following Friday. The TPs in the class will help with this process. Groups have been created in eSchools with the following titles "Prep 1 Early Years Chinese Readers", etc so that parents can access the audio files for the individual books should the children have any problems reading. These will be conveyed to the parents during the workshop.

You are most welcome to attend the workshop so that you have a better understanding of the programme.

IPC - WATER WORLD

This week, we dived into our Water World unit with a big splash! Our Prep 2 playground was transformed into a ‘water wonderland’. The children got to explore water through a variety of fun water activities. It was lovely to see the children's enthusiasm and joyfulness during the entry point! We then picked our brains with a knowledge harvest session and it was great to find out how much we already know, why water is important, water safety and water conservation. We can already tell that this is going to be an exciting unit for the children.

LANGUAGE ARTS

We began our new Writer's Workshop unit this week titled 'personal narrative'. We have been reading books on this genre which has brought about many discussions on memories the children have. They will begin to write their own personal narrative next week.

Handwriting this week was the letter m and next week will be the letter h. We are still encouraging good posture and the correct pencil grip when writing.

In reading, our CAFE strategy is Slow Sloth - back up and reread (this is also used for writing) and Stretchy Snake - stretch the words out.

MATHEMATICS

Our new Mathematics concept saw the children identify and compare 2D shapes. Properties such as corners and sides were discussed. Creative pictures were designed using only shapes and we look forward to these brightening up our classrooms.

Next week we will be looking at 3D shapes.
