Principal's Message
Good afternoon Canby High School Students and Families!
Next week is a fun and exciting week at CHS. It is Winter Spirit Week, where students are encouraged to dress up, attend sporting events and activities, and enjoy our CHS community. There are a number of events that are open to the public, and we would love to see you! Check out the upcoming events section for details.
Students will finish the week with our Winter Semi-Formal Dance on Saturday. If your student would like to invite a guest from another school to attend, guest pass forms are available in the Student Center. Guest Passes are due Tuesday, 1/17 by 3:40pm. This is a strict deadline. We look forward to an awesome week!
CHS students have great experiences while in high school. Recently, our Dance team performed at the Moda Center during the half time of a Blazer Game. We are so proud of our students who participate in the many sports, clubs, and activities here at CHS. Research shows that students who are involved get better grades and have a better experience in high school. From gaming club to speech and debate, athletics to theater, we have a wide variety of extra and co-curricular activities for students. Please check out our clubs and activities page of our website for more information, and encourage your student to engage with us!
Have a wonderful week!
Best,
Cari Sloan

Forecasting Information
Forecasting for students is the first week of February. This is the process where we build next year’s schedule based on student needs and requests. It is important for families to work with their students on their course choices. The more accurate the information, the more likely students will get the class choices they request. The schedule will also be more balanced and serve our students’ needs more fully. This process is essential, and we look forward to partnering with students, staff, and families in order to build the best schedule for next year. Please watch for more information to come.
Amazing Educator Award
Educators go above and beyond. For their tireless hard work and dedication to teaching, inspiring and supporting our next generation, we'd like to say thanks! Help us honor outstanding educators and tell their inspiring stories by nominating an Amazing Educator today. Honorees will share their stories in a special section that will be included in more than 20 Pamplin Media newspapers, websites and social media in March.
Nominations are due by Jan. 31, 2023.
We'd like to hear about anyone who works or volunteers in a public school, private school, community college or university in one of the communities served by Pamplin Media newspapers.
Amazing Educators is part of our ongoing series honoring exceptional people in our communities. Want to read some good news? Click here to read about last year's winners and learn more.
State Testing
Over the next few months 11th grade students will have the opportunity to show their knowledge and growth of grade level learning in the areas of math, reading, writing, and science through state testing. This testing:
Helps us understand whether students are progressing with College and Career Readiness skills
Informs the community about how local schools are supporting all students
Informs school improvement planning, student support, budgets, targeted resources.
We will use this information to:
Make decisions about resources
Ensure access to opportunities and academic pathways
More information and dates to follow. Thank you!
Inclement Weather
As the temperatures get colder, it’s time to start preparing for winter weather! If the weather is severe enough to cancel school, the first day of inclement weather will be a snow day for all! Any inclement weather day thereafter will be an online learning day. Elementary school families, this means you may see iPads come home with your students if questionable weather is forecasted.
In the event of an online learning day, Canby High School will begin at 8:40 a.m. and all other schools will begin at 9:30 a.m. Students should watch for Zoom links from their teachers. If students have trouble connecting or need help, they should reach out to their teacher. Canby School District strives to make the most of this valuable educational time, but please know that students will not be penalized if they are unable to connect.
To make sure you’re set to receive information about school delays, or closures, and online learning days, please subscribe to Canby School District on FlashAlert. Now is also a good time to update your text preferences online by listing your phone number.
For more information, please see our inclement weather page.

Attendance at CHS
To ensure the accuracy and efficiency of our attendance process, please remember the following guidelines:
If your student needs to leave class for an appointment or because they are sick, inform the attendance office 30 MINUTES PRIOR to leave time. This will help us ensure that your student receives a note to leave class in a timely manner. Students will not be excused without a note.
Pre-Excused Absence: For any anticipated absence that will be more than three days, students are expected to pick up a Pre-Excused Absence Form from Jessie Munoz at the Attendance Office.
To report an absence, call Jessie Munoz at our attendance line at 503-263-7210 or email chs-attendance@canby.k12.or.us.
Students have 48 hours to have unexcused absences excused. Students may lose the opportunity to make up work for credit due to unexcused absences. Please report an absence as soon as possible.
Remember that attendance matters and students who attend class regularly are more likely to stay on track, graduate on time, learn deeply, and get the most from their high school experience.
Information for Seniors
Senior families can put a Senior Ad in the yearbook! Please see this LINK for more information and how to get your ad in the yearbook.
The senior schedule is linked on the “Graduation Information” page. Please check back often for updates. Again, seniors need to watch their emails for graduation information and updates.
