Happy New Year 5C

We're measuring Up to Reach our Goals!

Setting the Bar High in 2016!

Dear Students and Families of 5C,

We are kicking off the year setting goals for 2016. As a class we are going to be working on an important Habit - Putting things First! And working to create Smart (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timely) goals and track them. As a class, we are taking this habit to heart and we are getting organized, working first, then playing.

  • We are continuing to use our assignment pads, edmodo, google classroom and Whooo's Reading. Some of us have established new reading goals for 2016.
  • We also are working on making meaningful goals weekly in our Friday folders. Be sure to share and discuss every week.
  • Keep working on IXL.com to practice important 5th grade math skills!

I also want to thank you for your wonderful holiday gifts and cards. They were all so appreciated. I can't tell you how much they all meant. I wish you all a New Year filled with happy, healthy and wonderful memories!

Warm wishes to you all,

Dawn Campiglia

Fractions: Parts of a Whole

Unit 5 focuses on naming numbers as fractions, decimals, and percents. Your child will use pattern blocks to review basic fraction and mixed-number concepts as well as notations. Your child will also formulate rules for finding equivalent fractions. In Fourth Grade Everyday Mathematics, your child learned to convert easy fractions to equivalent decimals and percents. For example, 1/2 can be renamed as 0.5 or 50%. Your child will now learn (with the use of a calculator) how to rename any fraction as a decimal and as a percent. Unit 5 also introduces two new games: Estimation Squeeze, to practice estimating products; and Frac-Tac-Toe, to practice converting fractions to decimals and percents. These games, like others introduced earlier, are used to reinforce arithmetic skills. Both games use simple materials (calculator, number cards, and pennies or other counters) so you can play them at home.

In addition, students are encouraged to continue to use our math apps on their IPads. Ixl.com will really help them reinforce their fraction problems at their level! Optional challenge problems will start coming home in January.

We are busy conducting research about the important discoveries of our explorers. Our research will be organized in a Treasure Chest filled with creative and informative materials. We will have an Explorer Museum to share our treasures. Look for an invitation to the big event in your student's take - home folder. I have scheduled 2 different opportunities for you to visit our Explorer's Museum. Please also make arrangements for your child to be there to participate.

The Writing Workshop

We Have just finished our Harris Burdick stories! We are so proud of our hard work and were excited to have a writer's celebration to share our great stories with our 3rd grade friends in Jennings.

Reading Workshop

In addition to reading our Journey's selections, we are busy wrapping up our Maniac Magee Novel. Upon it's completion we will embark on a true adventure as we read a historical fiction story, Number the Stars. With this novel we will take a journey back in time and learn about the impact of the Nazis on two families in Denmark during WWII. Of course, we are also still enjoying our read aloud, Wonder. So many great books to enhance our love of reading!

Join us on Whooo's Reading: https://www.learn2earn.org/login to check out what we are saying about our books. We are responding to reading and making reading fun!

Students are expected to read their independent books every night for 20 minutes. We now have a digital reading log that we must complete every night, please help add this to our homework routine.
