Attendance and Absence Policy
If your child will be late to school or will be absent, please notify the office before 9:00 am by calling 317-915-4210 and selecting 2 for the Attendance Line.
You can leave a message 24 hours a day.
You can also email Amy Powell at apowell@hse.k12.in.us.
Notifying the teacher is fine, but it is the parents' responsibility to report to Attendance the reason for an absence, otherwise it will be marked as Unexcused.
Please feel free to review the District Attendance and Absence Policy in the Elementary School Handbook https://hpe.hseschools.org/student/student-handbook
Coaches will choose up to 30 applicants to invite to try outs. From there, seven students will be invited to join our team. Please see the application for more details.
This club has limited space and requires a high level of commitment from each member. We will meet 1-2 times a week after school from September-January. We will enter 2 full day competitions this winter. There is a chance for a possible season extension depending on competition results.
Speech Language Corner
Speech screening will be conducted with all students in Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grades, and all new students to HPE. Speech errors that are age appropriate will be documented, monitored and in some cases, packets will be sent home to practice speech error sounds. Non age appropriate speech errors may warrant speech therapy, thus you will be contacted to discuss program options.
Feel free to contact me via email (tvanhorn@hse.k12.in.us) if you have any questions or concerns regarding your child's speech or hearing abilities.
Thanks and let's have a great year!

Social Emotional Learning:
This week each class began to teach their weekly Social Emotional Learning lessons. Once a week students will engage in a lesson with their class to explore different skills students need to be successful at school.
This week's lessons were:
Kindergarten - Lesson 1: Learning to Listen
Summary:
In this week’s lesson, your child will learn the learning rules for how to be a good listener. These rules help your child know how to listen and act in a group so that everyone can learn.
Try This at Home:
Ask your child to tell you each rule and show you the action that goes with it (Eyes watching, ears listening, voice quiet, and body still). Consider reminding your child to use the listening rules before giving directions for daily activities.
1st Grade - Lesson 1: Learning to Listen
Summary:
In this week’s lesson, your child will learn the rules for how to be a good listener.
Try This at Home:
Ask your child what the listening rules are in their classroom (eyes watching, ears listening, voice quiet, body still). Consider reminding your child to use the listening rules before giving directions for daily activities.
2nd Grade Lesson 1: Learning to Listen
Summary:
In this week’s lesson, your child will learn the rules for how to be a good listener.
Try This at Home:
Ask your child what the listening rules are in their classroom (eyes watching, ears listening, voice quiet, body still). Consider reminding your child to use the listening rules before giving directions for daily activities.
3rd grade Lesson 1: Respectful Learners
Summary:
In this week’s lesson, your child will learn and practice two skills for learning: focusing attention and listening.
Try This at Home:
Ask your child how focusing your attention and listening help you to be a better learner at school.
4th grade Lesson 1: Empathy and Respect
Summary:
In this week’s lesson, your child’s learned the definitions of empathy and respect. We discussed how these two skills help us get along with others.
Try This at Home:
Ask your child to share with you a time that they showed empathy or respect to another person. You may need to provide an example yourself first.
