MTSS for District Leadership Teams: Engineer Your Plan & Ignite! A 2-Day Event
"The single most cost-effective way to improve our schools is to increase the assessment literacy of concerned clienteles." (Popham, 2018)
Presented by Dr. Kim Gibbons
Day 1 - August 21: Setting Your District & Building Teams Up for Success:
Are you wondering how the district leadership team interacts with the building teams? Are you unclear of the purpose and tasks of each team? Do your teams have clearly defined roles and responsibilities? Day 1 will be devoted to discussing communication plans, working through the knowledge and skills needed about MTSS to sustain practice over time, and opportunities to evaluate and refine your current implementation plan.
Day 2 - December 3: Implementing and Evaluating Universal and Supplemental Instruction:
District leadership teams will learn about a framework to evaluate universal and supplemental instruction and plan for improvements. Michigan's Essentials of Effective Multi-Tiered Systems of Support
Background
The Michigan Department of Education recently released a Multi-Tiered System of Support Framework to guide districts and schools in implementing a systemic process for designing core instruction, interventions, and supports to address the academic and non-academic needs and assets of all students. The accompanying Practice Profile describes the philosophy, research base, and five essential components of an effective multi-tiered system of support. These "essentials" include the following:
- Team-Based Leadership
- Tiered Delivery System
- Selection and Implementation of Instruction, Interventions and Supports
- Comprehensive Screening & Assessment System, and
- Continuous Data-Based Decision-Making
Program Description
Participants of this session will explore the essential components of the MDE MTSS Framework and consider how they relate to systems in place in their districts/schools. Through a deeper study of the Practice Profile, teams will begin to build shared understanding of the supports and resources necessary for effective implementation of MTSS and reflect on the extent to which the practices are in place in their districts/schools. Teams will identify areas where future exploration and study might be needed to further support educators and students. An overview of the MDE monitoring indicators for MTSS will also be provided. Additional support is available through follow-up technical assistance and site-based consulation, as requested, to assist district/school leaders in using the Practice Profile as a tool to inform district/school improvement planning.
Note
The MDE MTSS Framework and Practice Profile will be addressed as part of the 2018-2019 MTSS Leadership Network series. Much of the the information being presented in this workshop will be shared with Network participants.
