Heights Happenings
Winston Heights PS - Term 3, Week 8 2022
Principal's Message
WOWeee! The past two weeks have been jam-packed full of learning, fun, and celebration. Our students have been presented with a vast array of extra-curricular and sporting opportunities, many of which families and friends have had the delight of attending. Here’s a snapshot of what’s been happening at Winston Heights PS over the past two weeks:
Hills Performing Arts Festival - students in our choir and flute ensemble confidently performed at the HPAF in front of a sell out crowd! We are very proud of the impeccable manner in which these students represented our school and performed with exuberance. Thank you to Mrs Wright and Mrs Sim for giving up much of their own time to organise, rehearse with students and attend the HPAF with each group.
Kindy Farm Excursion - it was all smiles and excitement when our Kindergarten students went on their first excursion to the farm last week. From milking Daisy the cow to going on a tractor ride, our Kindy students were full of stories when they returned to school. Thank you to our wonderful parent helpers who attended the excursion to support our students and teachers.
Public Speaking Competition - last week saw the Early Stage 1 and Stage 3 finals of the Public Speaking Competition take place. We are very proud of our Kindergarten students who had the courage to present their speech in front of their peers and teachers. Congratulations to our Kindy public speaking champion, Marianna and runner up, Valluvin. Our Stage 3 class finalists presented thought-provoking prepared speeches, before wowing the audience with their quick-thinking impromptu speeches. Outstanding effort by all finalists. Congratulations to our Stage 3 champion, Matilda and runner-up Oscar. Matilda and Oscar will join our Stage 2 finalists, Lachlan and Hailey, as they move forward into the combined schools final to compete against students from other schools in the Hills. The finals will be held at our school on Wednesday 14 September. Good luck Matilda, Oscar, Lachlan, and Hailey. A special thank you to Ms Lehner for her outstanding organisation of the WHPS public speaking competition and Hills school finals.
Zone Athletics Carnival - I had the pleasure of attending the Castle Hill PSSA Zone Athletics Carnival last week with many of our WHPS students. It was such an exciting day - to be able to cheer on our athletes as they competed in a variety of track and field events. I would like to congratulate all students who represented our school, showing impressive levels of stamina, sportsmanship, and determination. A huge congratulations to Havana and Lachlan who will be representing Castle Hill PSSA as they compete at the Sydney West Regional Carnival.
Book Character Parade and Literacy Day - on Monday we celebrated the wonder of books and reading with our annual Book Character Parade and Literacy Day, all organised by our very own Mary Poppins (Mrs Hinton). From the character parade to literacy on the lawn, from performances by students to watching Story Quest - the day was a literature lovers paradise! Thank you to Mrs Hinton and her team of teacher helpers for orchestrating such a brilliant event for all to enjoy!
K-2 Athletics Fun Day - balls and beanbags … hula hoops and parachutes … sack races and relay races … visitors and parent helpers … BBQs and sausage sizzles - our K-2 Fun Day had it all! A sensational, fun-filled time was enjoyed by everyone who attended. Thank you to our K-2 teachers for organising such a wonderfully fun community event. Thank you to our P&C for putting on a sausage sizzle for our students.
Lockdown and Evacuation Drills
As part of our Health and Safety processes, our school will be conducting a Lockdown Drill and an Evacuation Drill over the coming weeks. This is part of our commitment to keeping our school community safe and informed on what to do in an emergency.

Term 3 News from our Library
Book Character Dress-up & Literacy Day
The Fairy Godmother (aka Mrs Sim) and Little Miss Sunshine (aka Ms Adams) teamed up to bring sunshine to WHPS last Monday after a cold and wet Father’s Day weekend. Mary Poppins (aka Mrs Hinton) was very grateful. All classes, together with all our teachers and office staff had a great day dressing up for our annual Book Character Parade. Mr Cool (aka Mr Younan) was our entertaining MC.
We were impressed with the thought and effort put into our student’s and teacher’s book character costumes this year. Many students dressed as a character from a book they had recently read. Mary Poppins was heard saying ‘it was supercalifragilisticexpialidocious and practically in perfect in every way!’
Thank you to all the parents and grandparents who attended the parade and those also involved behind the scenes. Our photos captured all the fun!
Students also participated in ‘Literature on the Lawn’, and were the audience for 3B’s readers theatre of The march of the ants by Ursula Dubosarsky, adapted by Mrs Bryant and 4O’s performance of the fractured fairytale The true story of Jack and the Beanstalk, directed by Mr Younan.
The Story Quest performance was enjoyed by all students and staff.
The final activity for Term 3 will be the Book Week Bingo competition. Students will bring home a bingo sheet over the next week to complete, then return to the library and be in the draw to win a book prize, 1 prize per grade.
It’s been a wonderful term celebrating books and children’s literature altogether after a few unusual years.
Thank you for your support of library events.

Kindergarten excursion to Calmsley Hill City Farm
On Tuesday 30th August, Kindergarten were very excited to go to Calmsley Hill City Farm. For many children it was their first time on a bus. There was a lot of excitement. The first part of the day involved looking at and learning all about different animals. The children loved patting goats and sheep as well as looking at pigs, cows and alpacas. A highlight of the day was going on a tractor ride. It was windy and a very bumpy ride but the children absolutely loved it. The afternoon involved watching three shows. This included a demonstration of how to use a whip and how to sheer a sheep. The children loved meeting Ace and watching a working dog show. The teachers were extremely proud of all the children and how they behaved on the day. It certainly was a very quiet bus ride home. The children had a fantastic day. A special thank you to the parents who were able to help on the day as well.
