Superintendent's Message
5/14/2021
Dear JUHSD Community,
I hope that you were able to enjoy the sunshine this past week and spend time with family and friends. San Mateo County has been cleared to move into the state's yellow tier for COVID-19 reopening, which means that we can resume many activities. Along with this good news is the qualifying of children 12-15 for vaccinations. I urge all to get vaccinated, please see information on vaccination events below.
As we get closer to graduation, I am excited for the opportunity to celebrate the achievements of our remarkable Class of 2021. I’d like to acknowledge our principals, vice principals, and their staff for arranging graduation celebrations in the midst of changing health conditions and directives.
While there has been a relaxation of health guidance around safety protocols, please be advised that both graduates and attendees must wear a mask at our graduation ceremonies. One significant reason for this is that our graduations will likely be the largest events many of us have attended in fifteen months. The psychological impact may be substantial --- and we want it to be a positive experience for all.
Graduation Dates:
Tuesday, 5/25/21 Thornton High School, Westmoor High School
Wednesday, 5/26/21 Jefferson High School, Ocean High School, Terra Nova High School
Friday, 6/4/21 Adult School
Tuesday, 6/22/21 Adult Transition
Looking toward next year, I anticipate a full return to in-person learning with all students attending school five days a week beginning August 9, 2021 as our legislators have indicated that they will not be providing waivers for instructional settings. We recognize that some of our families would like to continue distance learning in the next school year.
However, it is our understanding that the state will not allow this academic option. Please be assured that JUHSD will continue to follow health and safety guidelines set forth by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), the San Mateo County Office of Education (SMCOE), and the San Mateo County Public Health Department. I appreciate your continued patience and flexibility as we navigate the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
As we prepare for the final two weeks of school, please know we are here to support you. Have a great weekend!
Warmly,
Toni Presta
Superintendent
