What is anime?
Anime is a type of Japanese animation that can be watched by all ages and by both genders. There are many categories that fit a certain type of anime. The categories are comedy, romance, action, horror, game base and Sci Fi which is about technology and science. Many anime series want a certain type of audience. If it says Shonen the anime is for young boys. Shojo is for young girls, Seinen is for teenage boys or young male. Josei is for young women and kodomo is for really young children. Just because the person who made the anime wants a certain type of audience that doesn't mean that you can't watch all the other anime series.
Difference between anime and manga
Many people get confused and don't know the difference between anime and manga. Well manga is another Japanese creation that allows you to read a book instead of watch the screen. In my opinion manga is a lot harder than anime because you need to get out of your comfort zone and start reading right to left. All you need to do in anime is watch the screen. If you are a more creative person I recommend you read manga because you can imagine the imaginary sounds but if you are not creative you can watch anime. To sum up anime is watching Japanese animations and manga is reading Japanese drawings and writings.

History of anime
It all started in the beginning of the 20th century when a Japanese filmmaker was experimenting on animation techniques that was popular in the West. Although animation was already popular in the West he made anime popular world wide. The first ever anime is Astro boy which is created in 1963. During this period of time several filmmakers became famous especially Hayao Miyazaki and Mamoru Oshii. In the 1980's anime became the mainstream in Japan and experienced a boom in production. In 1990's and 2000's anime became accepted world wide as an entertainment. Especially the anime series called Akira and ghost in the shell became very famous world wide in 1995.
Formats in Anime
Like normal shows Anime can come in different formats. The most popular format is OVA which stands for original video animation. The only difference between normal TV shows and anime is anime does not have stigma attached to it. Another format would be movies, anime could be a movie but very few anime series are turned into movies because it hard. The last format anime comes in is TV shows. This is the most annoying way to watch anime because every week there would be that anime shown on TV and each episode is 20 minutes long. You'll need to keep watching until the anime is finally over. Most anime series have more than 12 episodes.
