Curriculum Corner
Spelling: Spelling lists came home on Monday. We will have a quiz on Friday.
Vocabulary: We are studying phon-, -er, -or, -ian, -ist this week. Vocabulary packet is due Thursday and quiz Friday.
Reading:
We will be continuing work with nonfiction reading strategies this week. Topics will include how to use context clues to find the meaning of difficult words, summarizing, and finding the main idea. We will be practicing those strategies as we read nonfiction books in book clubs. I will also be reading Zane and the Hurricane aloud to the class so we can continue to discuss our strategies surrounding this text and so the kids can see what nonfiction looks like as a narrative.
Science:
We will be starting our energy unit this week by learning how energy travels and building some circuits.
Math:
We took our unit 4 test today and will begin unit 5 tomorrow. I will be sending math journals home tomorrow. These can stay home since we will use a new math journal for the second half of the year.
STEPS to SIEW:
This year, student will be participating in a new curriculum called Second Step. At Stonegate, we will be referring to it as "Steps to Strong In Every Way." Every Friday, students will be participating in a lesson focused on social-emotional learning. We will be studying problem solving this week.
Valentine's Day
Instead of a traditional class party, we will be exchanging valentines and having our PTO-provided snack in the morning and will be having a Minute to Win It house competition in the afternoon. Stay tuned for a Sign Up Genius to help provide necessary materials.
Recess Attire
- We will always go outside if it is safe to do so. Dangerously cold temperatures, excessive ice, or precipitation will typically keep us in. We do not make the call until right before recess time, so please assume that we will go outside when you prepare your child for school.
- If your child is healthy enough to attend school, he/she is expected to go outside for recess unless he/she has a note from a doctor.
- If the temperature is below freezing, students are expected to have and wear a coat. Not only will they need it for recess, but I have been involved in more than one evacuation during winter months where kids without coats wished they had them.
- If your child would like to play in the snow, he/she must be prepared with full snow gear. This includes a winter coat, snow pants, snow boots (not fashion boots like Uggs), gloves or mittens, and a hat. There is nothing worse than spending the rest of the school day in cold, wet clothes, so we do not make exceptions to this rule.

Substitute Teachers Needed!
Attention all parents/guardians! Have you ever thought about getting paid for the time you spend at our school? Becoming a substitute teacher would do just that for you! Think of it as a paid volunteer position. You still get the opportunity to control your schedule and locations you work but have the added benefit of a little extra pocket money! If you are interested in this opportunity you may apply directly on the ZCS website or simply click here! You may also contact the subcoordinator (subcoordinator@zcs.k12.in.us ) for more information. Thank you!
