Open House
Animal Habitat Project
Next week we will be wrapping up the habitat unit by creating IN CLASS habitat dioramas. I am asking each student to bring a small shoe box or amazon box and some items that they can use to decorate the inside of their habitat in class! We will have some supplies to use within the classroom, but anything in particular your child may want they can provide from their home, if parents allow them to do so. The only requirement is that each student brings their own UNFINISHED empty box by Friday, March 3rd or Monday, March 6th at the latest. This will be an IN CLASS assignment. The habitats students will be able to choose from are: desert, arctic, rainforest and water habitats.
Thanks so much for your support in this FUN Science Extension!
P.S. Even old animal toys that are small that you would like to get rid of will work as well!
Stem Night
Read Across America
READ ACROSS AMERICA
Friday March 3 is our Read Across America Day! Students are invited to dress up as their favorite book character and guest readers will be coming to read. We are excited to spend the day getting excited about reading!
If you are interested in coming in and reading to a class, please click here to sign up!
Healthy Snacks!
PLEASE REMEMBER TO PACK YOUR CHILD A HEALTHY AND MESS FREE SNACK EACH DAY.
Did you know that a snack at the right time between meals can prevent major hunger pangs and gives a child an energy boost to keep him or her studying and playing hard at school?
Specials S'more
What is your child learning this week?
Phonics: In Phonics students will be reviewing some past concepts as well as adding
some new learning! Students will listen to riddles aloud and also be given riddles to read independently. Students will then be asked to identify which part of the riddle rhymes. Another concept they will be reviewing is initial sounds, students will be given words aloud or on cards to read and they will have to orally tell you what letter it starts with and then sort the common initial sounds of the list of words given. The new learning this week will be about double final consonants. The double final consonants that we will focus on this week will be: -ss,-ff,-ll,and -zz. Lastly students will be learning about the final sound -ck as well. This week will be busy in phonics, but these new components being taught are very crucial to know fluently in order to help students continue improving their reading levels. We will also continue adding to their sight word knowledge, we will add the four following words: down, off, so and will.
Grammar : In Grammar, we are continuing to review and work on writing a complete sentence. It always starts with an uppercase letter and ends with an end mark, like a period. Writers use complete sentences to help make their message clear and that a complete sentence includes a subject and a verb. The subject has a noun that tells who or what the sentence is about and the verb tells what that person or thing is doing or did.
Reading: The students will be reading a non-fiction (informational text) and a fiction read aloud. The stories are Plants Feed Me. and PB & J Hooray The students will be reviewing story sequencing and will be able to retell the story. We will also be reviewing authors purpose and central idea and key details. We will also be reviewing text features in our informational text.
Our new vocabulary words are: crop, factory, ingredient, garden, harvest, plant.
Writing- Students will begin researching a Country using on-line sources only. The students will really be taking the research process into their own hands now that they have practiced.
Math- In math we are continuing our 3 Dimensional Shapes Unit. We will be diving into the names of all the 3D shapes and exploring what they look like in real life. The student will use what they have learned about the difference about 2D and 3D shapes and explain the difference. They will also start learning more Here we will focus on reviewing the name of the shape as well as identifying/classifying the attributes of vertices, sides, Faces and if it slides, rolls or does both.
Social studies The students will meet Sam Houston and Lyndon B. Johnson in puppet form and learn about their contributions to Texas history. Students will add new facts about these historical figures in their Social Studies book.
Science: In science this week we will continue observing and identifying the dependence of animals on air, water, food, space and shelter. This week students are really working on the need for food for an animal. We will start off the week by discussing what kind of food a basic pet you may have in your home needs. We will talk about what they need to eat in order to survive. Then we will introduce wildlife animals from other habitats and brainstorm a list of foods they believe these animals eat in order to survive in their given habitat. This is where the lesson will then introduce carnivores, herbivores and omnivores. We will talk about the differences and play numerous games to help students understand the difference of the three and understand what animals are categorized where and why. Lastly, we will talk about the different habitats that we have in the world and talk about what animals could live in each habitat based on the food provided and why.
