LINK TO LARGO HIGH SCHOOL WELCOME BACK LETTER
From August 7, 2023
Dear Largo High School Community,
I greet you with “Den Pride!” I hope that you have had an opportunity to rest and enjoy some of your favorite activities this summer. I am excited to welcome you back to school for the 2023-2024 school year.
At Largo High School, our aim is to provide a quality instructional program and robust school culture that is grounded by our vision and mission. The vision of Largo High School is for students to become empowered lifelong learners and productive citizens in a global society. Our mission is to create an inclusive community where all students are nurtured, engaged, and challenged to reach their potential through the tenets of leadership, integrity, optimism, and nobility (L.I.0.N). As the school leader, I will be leading the charge for our school to march toward a five-star school in the state of Maryland over time. In order to achieve this feat, we will focus our efforts in the following areas:
- School Safety and Culture
- Academic Achievement
- School Quality and Success
- Graduation Rate
- Readiness for Post-Secondary Success
- School Quality and Student Success
As we prepare for the school year, we are excited to announce new programs and initiatives that will take place at Largo High School. We will welcome a new Immersion Program that will focus on Spanish, French, and Chinese. Additionally, we will be implementing an advisory block to focus on the academic, and social and emotional needs of our students. Also, all students in all secondary schools will be required to use clear book bags only. This initiative has been shared with our community widely, and has been posted to our school’s website.
Largo students do not wear uniforms. However, we will follow the PGCPS Dress Code, in compliance with Administrative Procedure 5152. You can find a copy of the procedure as one of the attachments in your letter. Here are some important dates that you want to be aware of:
- August 9th begins the Fall sports season. Anyone with questions should contact our Athletic Director, Coach Ayana Ball-Ward. In order to participate, students in grades 10-12 must meet academic expectations of a 2.0 grade point average for the 4th quarter of the 2022-2023 school year. All incoming 9th graders are automatically eligible for the fall season only. Documentation must be uploaded to aktivate.com before students try out for any athletic team. Copies of the athletic packet are available in the main office and on the PGCPS Athletics website.
- August 17th is our first-time ninth grade parent meeting. The meeting will take place in the Largo Multipurpose Room, which is to the left as soon as you enter the school. Parents will have the opportunity to meet the principal, assistant principal over the class of 2026, and other critical personnel to receive pertinent information that will arm you with knowledge to assist your child in having a successful year.
- August 25th is “Transition Day” for our incoming 9th grade students. Transition day is designed to assist freshmen with making a smooth transition into high school, focused on helping students to navigate the building, begin meeting their new teachers and classmates, and align with Largo’s expectations for success. School busses will run on a regular schedule and you should receive information from the transportation department regarding bus route numbers. If you have any questions, please call transportation at 301-952-6570.
- August 28th is the first day of school. Our school hours are 7:45 am - 2:25 pm. Students will receive their schedules and the bell schedule during homeroom on the first day of school.
- September 14th is our “Back to School Night” for all students and families in grades 9-12. We will have grade-level sessions prior to the main meeting beginning at 5:30 p.m.

As summer slowly comes to a close, and we find ourselves making our way back to “The Den” I am excited about the possibilities that lie ahead for each of us individually and our school collectively. I look forward to greeting each of you soon for our journey ahead.
In pride,
Albert T. Lewis
Principal
