Why the Tree Lighter is a Surprise, but Not Really
Once again on Thursday, our community gathered for the annual tree lighting. It is hard to believe that its is the 10th annual lighting. As Mayor Wood put it, "Amber, you started a thing.". Amber Hoffus, the founder and driving force behind the tree lighting, really did start a thing. It is a thing that made me realize just how important the event is. Every year the identity of the tree lighter is a closely guarded secret (or at least I never know who it is). Every year they announce the winner and everyone in the crowd nods and you hear comments like, "I wouldn't have thought of...., but they are a perfect choice." Year on year, I hear these sentiments and whole heartedly agree. That got me thinking about volunteering and the work that goes on in a small community.
Why is the tree lighter always a surprise, of sorts, but also almost universally agree agreed upon. The answer lies in the heart of volunteering. It is no coincidence that I am writing this after our annual Santa Day and Minor Hockey Day, where volunteerism is alive, well, and flourishing. Back to the question, why is it a surprise? Volunteers give their time freely, not for recognition, but because, as Mayor Wood said when describing this year's tree lighter, "they see a job that needs done and do it." If you have ever been part of an event, finding someone to do the flashy jobs is easy, it is finding someone to do the behind the scenes, down and dirty jobs that is a challenge. It is in these jobs that volunteers truly shine, so they are often unnoticed and unrecognized. This is the heart of the volunteer, do what needs done without needing to be recognized.
This year's tree lighter was Susanne Cairnes. In listening to Mayor Wood's introduction it was easy to see why she was so deserving. As he spoke, you could see everyone in the crowd remembering a time when Susanne had helped them out, whether it was at work at the co-op or as part of the plethora of events that she helps out with. It was no surprise that Susanne would be chosen, but because of her ardent humility she may not have immediately come to mind. As I contemplated the tree lighter event, I realized that, if the tree lighter is well chosen, it should always come as a bit of a surprise. The most deserving people would be the last to admit they are deserving. One of the hallmarks of a great volunteer is the humility of self. It is never about self, or recognition for a good volunteer, but rather about getting the job done and that job is lifting the community higher than it was before.
This weekend's events took countless hours of volunteer time and volunteers. Many, many people came together to make the events unfold. Some were in the limelight and easily recognized for the work they did, but many were in the background working diligently at tasks that few if anybody would notice. This is the power of volunteerism, the work gets done, but we never really know by who. The volunteer remains our unsung hero. Congratulations to Susanne for the honor of being named tree lighter and thank you for all that she does for her community. Also, thank you to all of the volunteers who work so hard to make our community better each and every day, although you don't want it I hope that you receive the recognition you deserve.

Glow Volleyball a Huge Success
Huge shout out to Mrs. Mielke and the SRC for planning the glow volleyball event last Friday. There were 5 teams who competed. Through their entry fees and food sales, they raised just under $300 for Telemiracle. It was a great event that we will most certainly do again. Thank you to the students who made it a huge success. Congrats to the champions, Boo.
What are they doing on their phones anyway?

Check Your Punch Card Balance
Please note, as we get used to this new system, please be aware that punch card balances may be up to 1 week behind.
Once you click the link below and find your child's account number, you will see a number to the left of their account number (i.e. 17). That number will not change, so you only have to remember that number going forward.
We hope that this will help our families.
